SUFFOLK - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled five town hall meetings in communities along the U.S. Route 460 corridor between Suffolk and Petersburg to discuss the current work on the U.S. Route 460 Corridor Improvements Project.

The five town hall meetings offer residents information in an informal setting, ahead of formal hearings expected to be held this fall as part of the environmental impact statement process. Each meeting will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and include a brief presentation followed by a question and answer session with project team members.

VDOT and its federal partners, the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are working to evaluate five alternatives for the Route 460 corridor.  Information is being analyzed to evaluate the potential social, economic and environmental impacts of the project that will be reviewed at the public hearings. 

Built as a two-lane highway between Petersburg and Suffolk in the 1930s, this 55-mile stretch of Route 460 was upgraded to four lanes in the 1950s. The Virginia Transportation Act of 2000 designated it a “High Priority Corridor.” The existing highway doesn’t meet current standards for medians, shoulders and other key features.

The Corridor Improvements Project seeks to improve the efficiency and safety of Route 460. It will enhance hurricane evacuation for coastal communities and the movement of cargo from the Port of Virginia, improve connectivity for the nation’s largest concentration of military activity outside the national capital region, and support job and economic opportunities in southeastern Virginia.

Five alternatives are being evaluated at an equal level of detail. By the end of the year, or in early 2015, VDOT and its federal partners expect to complete the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement and select a preferred alternative.

One option is the route south of existing 460 that was chosen in 2012. Other options include one north of existing 460, and three alternatives provide differing approaches to improving 460 on or near the existing alignment. Bypasses around towns, with or without tolling, are among the options that are being considered. The option of building nothing also will be considered.
