VDOT REACHES AGREEMENT TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION OF ROUTE 58 HILLSVILLE BYPASS

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has reached an agreement with Branch Highways Inc. of Roanoke to construct the Route 58 Hillsville Bypass. Work will include the construction of a 5.27-mile stretch of highway around the Hillsville town limits from Route 714 to Route 820 in Carroll County.

The construction of the Hillsville Bypass is part of a public-private partnership agreement signed in December 2005. Under the terms of the agreement, Branch Highways, Inc. will design, build and widen 36 miles of Route 58 between Hillsville and Stuart as money becomes available. The Route 58 corridor begins southwest of Hillsville and continues east through Carroll, Floyd and Patrick counties to approximately one mile west of Stuart. Construction for the Hillsville Bypass is scheduled to start in October.

“The construction of the Hillsville Bypass is an important step in the completion of the expansion of Route 58 as an east-west connector,” said Pierce Homer, Secretary of Transportation. “The completion of this corridor will not only benefit the people of Hillsville, but as this project moves forward, it will bring increased economic opportunities to this area of the state.”

“I am pleased that we are moving ahead with the next phase of the Route 58 improvements. The construction of the Hillsville Bypass will provide motorists with increased mobility and safety in the Hillsville area.” said VDOT Commissioner David Ekern.

The $83 million Hillsville Bypass is the second portion of Route 58 to be constructed under the public-private partnership agreement. Branch Highways, Inc. also widened a three mile section of Route 58 in the Meadows of Dan area of Patrick County in December 2005.

The Route 58 Corridor Development Program is a construction project that encompasses close to 680 miles and finances planning, environmental and engineering studies, right of way, and construction. Work began on the East Coast and is moving westward.

In 1995, the General Assembly passed the Public-Private Transportation Act, allowing private entities to propose innovative solutions for designing, constructing, financing and operating transportation improvements.
