TRAFFIC ALERT: EXPECT TRAFFIC DELAYS ON GAME DAY ON SOUTHBOUND INTERSTATE 81 IN PULASKI COUNTY
Drivers on southbound Interstate 81 at mile marker 97 in Pulaski County should be prepared for delays this weekend as heavy traffic is expected on Saturday, Oct. 4 due to the Virginia Tech football game. Southbound I-81 at mile marker 97 is reduced to one lane due to repairs to the bridge over Route 611 (Newbern Road). The speed limit in this work zone is reduced to 55 mph.
Since bridge repairs began in late September, traffic congestion on southbound I-81 at mile marker 97 has been causing delays, especially during peak travel times. With the additional game day traffic, back-ups and delays are expected to increase on southbound I-81 in Pulaski County.
“If you are driving through this work zone, you should use caution and be patient, especially after the game, as there may be lengthy delays as football fans head home,” warns David Clarke, P.E., residency administrator for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Christiansburg Residency Office.
The lane closure is necessary due to repairs to the I-81 bridge over Route 611. The bridge was damaged in late August when an over height vehicle struck it.
