Travelers heading to the annual Hillsville Flea
Market
and Gun Show during Labor Day weekend should be prepared for new
traffic
patterns and considerable traffic delays.
The
town’s popular flea market and gun show will be held Friday, Aug. 29
through Monday, Sept. 1. This year,
in addition to heavy
traffic and congestion, visitors should be aware of road
construction
related to the Route 58 Bypass that may prevent them from following
their normal routes.
Work is underway to build the 5.2-mile Route 58 Bypass around Hillsville. When completed, the new bypass will benefit the community and the flea market. However, construction on the bypass will impact the Hillsville Flea Market traffic this year.
“The roadway improvements that are being made in Hillsville will benefit our community and flea market attendees for years to come. We hope people will pay close attention and watch for signs to alert them to this year’s traffic pattern changes,” said Bob Beasley, Hillsville Residency Administrator for the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Key Alerts:
Route 780 (Howlett Street)
Route 780 will be closed to through traffic. Motorists will not be able to use this route as a connector between Route 52 and Route 58. Parking areas on Route 780 will be available from the northern end of Route 780 (from Route 58).
Route 58 (Carrollton Pike)
Traffic on Route 58 will be reduced to one lane in each direction beginning about two miles west of Hillsville at Route 808, Expansion Drive, and continuing through the town limits. For safety reasons, no parking will be permitted in the median or on the shoulder of Route 58. “No Parking” signs will be posted.
Interstate 77 - Exit 14 (Hillsville/Galax)
Those planning to attend the Flea Market and Gun Show are encouraged to take I-77 and use Exit 14 (Hillsville/Galax) onto Route 58. While congestion is expected on I-77 in this area, the Virginia State Police will be directing traffic at the Exit 14 interchange when needed to promote safe travel. Motorists should watch for stopped vehicles in this area. VDOT Safety Service Patrol will be in the area to assist motorists. The Virginia State Police will be directing traffic at the I-77 and Route 58 interchange.
Radio Broadcasting and Electronic Message
Boards
The radio frequency 1610 AM and electronic message boards will provide drivers traffic information for visiting the flea market and gun show. Message boards located on I-77, US 58, and US 52 will provide additional directions to motorists entering the Hillsville area. Motorists traveling near Hillsville and not planning to attend the event should follow instructions on signs and message boards, which will give alternate routes around Hillsville.
