TRAFFIC ALERT: ROUTE 221 TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES IN BEDFORD COUNTY

Weather permitting, beginning at 6 a.m., on Sunday, June 8, work will begin to change the traffic pattern on Route 221 in Bedford County in Forest. The one lane of traffic that currently is open in each direction will be shifted from existing Route 221 onto newly constructed roadway. Once shifted, traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction.

This new traffic pattern is expected to be in place by 4 p.m. on Sunday. The traffic change is part of the ongoing Route 221 widening project and will affect traffic between Route 221’s intersections with Route 662 (Hooper Road) and Route 609 (Rustic Village Road).

On Sunday morning, while the traffic change is being implemented, drivers should expect temporary delays on Route 221 and watch for flaggers controlling traffic. In addition, State Police will direct traffic at Route 221’s intersections with Route 609, Route 811 (Thomas Jefferson Road), and Route 666 (Elkton Farm Road). Traffic signals at these intersections will be altered, so drivers should expect new traffic patterns.

This traffic shift is part of work that is underway to widen a 2.2-mile section of Route 221 from just west of the Norfolk Southern Railroad to east of Route 663 west of Forest. The speed limit through this area remains reduced to 35 mph.

Work on the Route 221 widening will continue into late 2009.
