VDOT ASKS FOR PUBLIC INPUT ON PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS TO I-77 AND I-81 OVERLAP
Scoping/Citizen information meeting scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 4

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a scoping/citizen information meeting to discuss proposed improvements to the Interstate 77 and Interstate 81 overlap near Wytheville.

VDOT, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is conducting a location study to evaluate possible alternatives to meet growing travel needs in the Interstate 77 and Interstate 81 overlap area between Exit 72 and Exit 81 in Wythe County.  The study team will take input from the public and other sources and develop a range of alternatives and then document the impacts of these alternatives in an Environmental Assessment.  The study began in June 2008 and is scheduled to be completed in winter 2010.

The scoping/citizen information meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Fort Chiswell High School, located at 1 Pioneer Trail in Max Meadows.

The meeting will be held in an informal “open forum” style and no formal presentation will be given.  VDOT representatives will be present to answer questions and explain the project.

Written comments about the project may be submitted at the meeting or until Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 by mail to Mr. Nicholas Nies, P.E., Virginia Department of Transportation, 1401 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219.  E-mail comments can be sent to Nicholas.Nies@VDOT.virginia.gov.  Please reference “Interstate 77 and 81 Improvements, Citizen Information Meeting Comments” in the subject heading.

Anyone requiring special assistance to attend and participate in this meeting may contact VDOT’s Civil Rights Division at (540) 387-5320 or (800) 611-5812 (TDD users can call 711).
