AFTERNOON ROAD CONDITIONS IN SALEM DISTRICT
Conditions as of 4:30 p.m.
SALEM - The Roanoke and New River Valleys are experiencing winter weather conditions. Motorists should delay travel if possible. If drivers must travel, watch for snow and ice on the roadway and allow extra travel time. Here are the road conditions as of 4:30 p.m.:
Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions exist on I-81 in Botetourt and Roanoke counties. Minor conditions exist on I-81 in Montgomery and Pulaski counties.
Interstate 581/Route 220 – Moderate conditions are reported on Route 220 in Henry County and Roanoke County and City. Minor conditions are reported in Franklin County.
Route 460 – Minor conditions exist on Route 460 in Bedford County and moderate conditions are reported on Route 460 in Montgomery and Roanoke counties.
In Carroll, Floyd, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, and Pulaski counties, primary and secondary roads are in moderate condition.
In Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Franklin, Giles, and Roanoke counties, primary and secondary roads are in minor condition.
The 12-county VDOT Salem District serves Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Franklin, Floyd, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke counties.
Road condition definitions:
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. Snow tires or chains are necessary.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. Snow tires or chains are advisable.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush. Driving with caution is recommended.
