TRAFFIC ALERT: ROUTE 501 TRAFFIC IN BEDFORD COUNTY TO BE DETOURED TOMORROW
A section of Route 501 in Bedford County will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, March 5, so crews can clean up a tractor-trailer accident that occurred on Tuesday, March 3. The accident location is about three miles south of Coleman Falls.
Vehicles other than tractor-trailers will be detoured off Route 501 near Eagle Eyrie Baptist Conference Center between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Motorists should expect a detour of approximately five miles. Traffic will detour onto Route 651 (Perch Road) and Route 645 (Holcomb Rock Road). Message boards will be in place to advise motorists of the detour.
The detour route is not suitable for commercial vehicles. A single lane on Route 501 will be opened periodically to allow tractor-trailers to pass, but commercial vehicle drivers are strongly recommended to detour onto Route 122 or expect significant delays.
Accident clean up will involve using a large crane to remove an overturned truck and large bales of cardboard that spilled down a steep embankment. Due to the steep embankment, the operation was scheduled for daylight hours.
For more information about delays on Route 501, dial 511 or visit the Web site at www.511Virginia.org.
