TRAFFIC ALERT: NORTHBOUND INTERSTATE 81 TRAFFIC DETOURED AT EXIT 150 IN TROUTVILLE
Disabled vehicles block northbound I-81 in Rockbridge County

SALEM – Both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County are blocked at mile marker 184 due to disable vehicles.  Traffic is backed up about 20 miles to mile marker 167 in northern Botetourt County. The Virginia Department of Transportation has been detouring traffic off northbound I-81 at exit 180 (Natural Bridge) onto northbound Route 11.

Around 9:15 a.m., VDOT will establish a second detour further south taking traffic off northbound I-81 at exit 150B (Troutville) in Botetourt County.  Traffic will be routed onto northbound Route 220 to Clifton Forge, then onto I-64 east to return to I-81 at mile marker 191.  Route 11 was not selected as a detour route because of heavy congestion in Rockbridge County.

VDOT still advises motorists not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary.

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511.  In areas where 511 is unavailable, dial 1-866-MY511VA (866-695-1182).  Traffic alerts and traveler information also are available at 511Virginia.org.
