Watch for flaggers on Route 58 west of Hillsville due to bridge beam placement

SALEM – The previously announced traffic pattern changes on the Route 58 Hillsville Bypass project for the week of May 18 have been rescheduled to start on Tuesday, May 26.  The traffic changes are necessary for bridge beams to be placed over Route 58.

Since last year, Route 58 traffic between the west limits of Hillsville and Interstate 77 has been reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted into the westbound lanes.

Next week, the contractor will be placing some beams on a new bridge over the westbound lanes of Route 58.  Flaggers will stop traffic on Route 58, and pilot trucks will lead vehicles from the westbound lanes into the eastbound lanes when the bridge beams are being lowered into place.

Weather permitting, Route 58 traffic traveling in both directions can expect periodic delays between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays while the bridge beams are being set.  Depending on how work progresses on placing the bridge beams, periodic delays may occur over a three-day period starting on Tuesday, May 26.

Flaggers will stop eastbound traffic on Route 58 near the Route 703 (Gardner Mill Road) intersection.  Westbound Route 58 traffic will be stopped just west of Route 780 (Howlett Street).

Electronic message boards will be in place on Route 58 to alert motorists to the change in traffic patterns.  Drivers should expect delays and watch for flaggers controlling traffic.

All work on the Route 58 Hillsville Bypass project is expected to be completed by November 2011.
