VDOT MONITORING ROAD CONDITIONS OVERNIGHT AND CONTINUING TO WORK ON SECONDARY ROADS IN SOME AREAS

SALEM – Virginia Department of Transportation crews and contractors in the 12-county Salem District spent the day plowing secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above), subdivision routes, and neighborhood streets.  Even though a snowplow will have pushed many of these roads and they will be passable, motorists are advised that a layer of ice and frozen snow will remain on most of these roadways.

All roads will become slick and icy overnight as lower temperatures cause refreezing.  Snowplow operators will monitor interstates and primary roads overnight and address any incidents.

The 12-county VDOT Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Franklin, Floyd, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.

Bedford County – Crews have made at least one pass on all secondary roads except for a few in the higher elevations.  Snowplow operators will continue to work on these remaining secondary roads into the evening and possibly overnight.

Botetourt and Roanoke counties – Crews continue working toward making one pass over secondary roads, but progress is slow on the remaining roads.  Drivers will continue working into the evening and possibly overnight on secondary roads.

Carroll and Floyd counties – All secondary roads have had one pass over with a snowplow.  Crews returned to widen out the plowed road surface today.

Craig County - All secondary roads have had one pass over with a snowplow.  Snowplow operators will monitor conditions overnight and address any incidents.

Franklin County – All secondary roads have had one pass over with a snowplow.  Crews returned to widen the plowed road surface today.

Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski counties – Crews continue working toward making one pass over secondary roads, but progress is slow on the remaining roads.  Drivers will continue working into the evening and possibly overnight on secondary roads.

Henry and Patrick counties – All secondary roads have had one pass over with a snowplow.  Crews returned to widen out the plowed road surface today.
