VDOT PROVIDES ROAD CONDITIONS UPDATE

SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation has worked throughout the day to plow roads.  Although road conditions are subject to change overnight as more snow may fall and temperatures lower, the current conditions at 4:30 p.m. for VDOT’s Salem District are as follows:

Interstates

Interstate 581 in Roanoke is clear.
Interstate 81 in Botetourt, Roanoke, Montgomery and Pulaski counties is clear.
Interstate 77 in Carroll County is currently clear.

Primary Roads

All primary roads (those numbered 1-599) in VDOT’s 12-county Salem District are in minor condition. Minor condition means the road is clear with isolated slick spots.  The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.  These roads are numbered 1-599 and include roads such as routes 8, 11, 100, 114, 116, 220, 221, 311, 419, and 460.  Roads may refreeze overnight, and drivers are reminded to use caution in cooler areas such as bridge, overpasses, ramps and shaded areas.

Secondary Roads

Snow plow drivers have started working on secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) and are make progress in all 12 counties. Work on neighborhood roads, secondary routes and subdivision streets will continue this afternoon and into the evening.  Operators will continue plowing on these roads as long as conditions do not change and require additional attention on the primary roads.

A number of trees have fallen from the weight of the snow and ice.  Crews have been dispatched to work on removing fallen trees in these counties:  Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Franklin, Henry, Patrick and Roanoke.

VDOT reminds residents that when clearing out driveways, it is best to shovel to the right when facing the street as this will cut down on the amount of snow that plows push back into the driveway.  In addition, VDOT asks residents not to push snow into the street as this can slow down snow removal operations.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – significant snow or ice on roadway, road partially blocked or drifting snow
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush
