TRAFFIC ALERT: THREE ROAD PROJECTS TO IMPACT TRAFFIC IN FRANKLIN COUNTY STARTING NEXT WEEK

SALEM – Weather permitting, starting Monday, April 18, work on three road projects will impact traffic in Franklin County.

First, the riding surface of the northbound Route 220 bridge over the Blackwater River will be replaced.  The bridge is located north of Rocky Mount.  Beginning Monday, northbound Route 220 will be reduced to one lane, and vehicles wider than 16 feet will be prohibited.  Motorists should use caution and watch for signs.  The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.  Estimated completion is mid-August.

Second, the southbound Route 220 bridge over the South Fork of Little Chestnut Creek will be repaired.  A barrier wall will be installed, and the left lane of southbound Route 220 will be closed.  The crossover at Route 756 also will be closed.  Repairs will include replacing the bridge railing and guardrail.  This work should be complete by mid-May.

Third, the Route 643 (Coles Creek Road) bridge over the Blackwater River will be replaced.  The bridge is located near Route 643’s intersection with Route 737 (Hickman Road).  Beginning Monday, the bridge will be closed, and traffic will have to detour around the closure.  Signs will be in place. Estimated completion is August.

Drivers are reminded to use caution in highway work zones.
