VDOT SCHEDULES PUBLIC HEARING FOR ROUTE 600 (PINEY WOODS ROAD) IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY

SALEM—The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a design public hearing on a proposed project to improve a 2.34-mile section of Route 600 (Piney Woods Road) in Montgomery County.  The section of Route 600 starts 0.16 mile northeast of Route 787 (Indian Valley Road) intersection and extends to the Route 672 (Big Branch Road) intersection.

The hearing will be held on Monday, Oct. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Auburn Elementary School located at 4315 Riner Road in Riner.

This hearing is being held to provide an opportunity for citizens or organizations to give VDOT input on the proposed project.  The hearing will be held in an open-house format with no formal presentation given.  VDOT representatives will be present to discuss the proposed project and to answer questions.

The purpose of this proposed project is to improve a 2.34-mile section of Route 600 by replacing the existing gravel roadway with an asphalt surface.  The current roadway has two eight-foot travel lanes and one-foot shoulders.  The project would widen the road to provide two nine-foot travel lanes with paved two-foot shoulders on each side.

Comments about the proposed project may be submitted at the hearing or until Nov. 3, 2011 by mailing them to Mr. C.E. Cumbie, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 3071, Salem, Va., 24153.  Comments also can be emailed to saleminfo@vdot.virginia.gov. Please reference “Route 600 Improvements” in the subject heading.

Anyone requiring special assistance to attend and participate in this hearing may contact C.E. Cumbie at 540-387-5353, 800-367-7623 or TTY/TDD 711.
