TRAFFIC ALERT: BRIDGE BEAM PLACEMENT TO REQUIRE NIGHTTIME DETOURS ON INTERSTATE 81 TRUCK CLIMBING LANE PROJECT IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY

As part of the ongoing road construction project to build a five-mile truck climbing lane along southbound Interstate 81 in Montgomery County between mile markers 120 and 125, bridge beams will be delivered  and set into place on two new bridges over I-81, starting Monday, June 11.

The bridge beam placement will require traffic to be detoured off either northbound or southbound I-81 for several nights during the next two weeks between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following morning.

A large crane will be used to lower the concrete or steel beams onto the new bridges.  To allow for equipment mobilization, delivery and placement of the beams, one direction of I-81 traffic will be detoured onto Route 11/460 during nighttime hours.

Northbound I-81 traffic will be detoured onto Route 11/460 at exit 118C (Christiansburg) and back onto I-81 at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns).   Southbound I-81 traffic will be detoured at exit 132 onto Route 11/460 and back onto I-81 at exit 118.

Weather permitting, detours and the traffic impacts are scheduled between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following morning as follows:

For the Route 636 (Seneca Hollow Road/Friendship Road) over Interstate 81:
• Monday, June 11, southbound  I-81 detour
• Tuesday, June 12, northbound I-81 detour
• Wednesday, June 13, southbound I-81 detour
• In addition, flaggers may control traffic on Route 636 at times during these nights.

For the Route 641 (Den Hill Road) over Interstate 81:
• Southbound detour for five nights, Sunday, June 17 through Thursday, June 21
• In addition, Route 641 will be closed to through traffic on these nights, and drivers will need to seek alternate routes.

Signs and message boards will be in place to alert drivers to these traffic detours.

Work on the truck climbing lane project is expected to be completed in November 2013.
