PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING SCHEDULED FOR INTERSTATE 581 AND ELM AVENUE PROJECT IN ROANOKE

SALEM —The Virginia Department of Transportation and design-build contractor American Infrastructure, Inc. will hold a public information meeting to discuss the upcoming project to improve the Interstate 581 and Elm Avenue interchange in Roanoke.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, April 11, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Jackson Park Branch Library, 1101 Morningside Street, Southeast, in Roanoke. Parking is available at the library, on the street or at Jackson Park. It will be an open-house format with no formal presentation given. VDOT and American Infrastructure, Inc. representatives will be present to discuss the project and to answer questions.

The purpose of this project is to improve traffic flow along I-581 and Elm Avenue by reducing congestion at the interchange.  This will be accomplished by adding one lane to both off ramps from I-581 and extending the left turn lane in each direction on Elm Avenue.

In addition, two Elm Avenue bridges will be widened: the bridge over I-581 and the bridge over the Norfolk and Southern Railroad tracks.  The vertical clearance on the bridge over I-581 will be increased from 14 feet to 16.5 feet.  A right turn lane also will be added from Elm Avenue onto Williamson Road.

Additional information is available at www.VirginiaDOT.org/ElmAvenue.
