TRAFFIC ALERT: INTERSTATE 581 TRAFFIC CHANGE AT ELM AVENUE INTERCHANGE TO BE RESCHEDULED

SALEM – The previously announced traffic pattern change on Interstate 581/Route 220 Expressway at the Elm Avenue interchange in Roanoke for this weekend will be rescheduled due to rainy weather and an equipment breakdown.

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced various nighttime lane and ramp closures on northbound and southbound I-581, Friday, May 9 through Tuesday, May 13, so the change could be made.  VDOT will communicate the new schedule once it has been determined.

The current traffic pattern on northbound and southbound I-581/Route 220 Expressway remains as it has for months with the right lane closed and the center and left lanes open to traffic.

After the traffic pattern change is rescheduled and put into place, the left lanes of northbound and southbound I-581 will be closed and the center and right lanes will be open to traffic. This new traffic pattern will remain in place until the end of the improvement project in summer 2015.

Signs and message boards will be in place to notify drivers of the lane closures and new traffic patterns. Citizens are encouraged to call 511 or visit www.511Virginia.org for real time traffic information.

Information about the project can be found online at www.VirginiaDOT.org/ElmAvenue.
