TRAFFIC ALERT: DAYTIME RAMP CLOSURE LIFTED FOR TRACTOR-TRAILERS AS PART MULTI-DAY NORTHBOUND INTERSTATE 81 DETOUR
Tractor-trailers will be able to reach northbound I-81 from Route 460 Business and Bypass
SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation has made a change to the traffic pattern as part of the ongoing multi-day detour northbound Interstate 81 detour in Montgomery County. The change will affect tractor-trailers traveling from Route 460 onto northbound I-81 during daytime hours.
Starting on Tuesday, April 8, the ramp leading from eastbound Route 460 Business onto northbound I-81 will be opened between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. each day for tractor-trailers. The ramp will close each night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. when all traffic is detoured off northbound I-81 between mile markers 121 and 125.
Opening this ramp during the daytime detour hours will allow tractor-trailer traffic traveling on the Route 460 Bypass to exit onto Route 460 Business at exit 2 (Christiansburg) and then enter northbound I-81. Detour signs are currently posted on Route 460 Bypass directing all traffic to use exit 2.
As part of a maintenance project to rehabilitate pavement on northbound Interstate 81 between mile markers 121 and 125 in Montgomery County, a multi-day detour was implemented on Sunday, April 6. The detour will be in place 24 hours a day for approximately eight consecutive days.
Traffic impacts will differ for day and nighttime hours during the detour.
Between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. each day, one lane of northbound I-81 will remain open for tractor-trailer traffic. All other traffic, including wide loads over 11 feet, will be detoured onto Route 11/460 at exit 118C in Christiansburg to return to I-81 at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns).
From 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. each night, all northbound I-81 traffic will exit onto Route 11/460 at exit 118C in Christiansburg and return to northbound I-81 at exit 132.
