The Virginia Department of Transportation worked through the night treating and clearing roads to keep the pavement from freezing. The interstates and major roads across the state are mostly clear with patches of ice and snow.

The subdivision streets and other secondary and some primary roads will be more difficult to drive on during the early morning hours. Low temperatures overnight have turned wet pavement and slush into slick driving conditions.

Motorists should give themselves extra time to reach their destinations this morning. They are urged to drive with extreme caution, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Motorists should drive slower than usual, keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and avoid slamming on the brakes when driving on ice. Motorists should drive gently and turn slowly. Sudden changes can cause cars to spin out of control.

Road conditions are expected to improve through the day as temperatures go up.
