STATEWIDE ROAD CONDITIONS - Jan. 23, 2005 4:30PM
Road conditions are improving across the state following this weekend's snow and ice storm.
Interstate highways and other major roadways are mostly clear with some icy patches.
Secondary roads - back roads and subdivision streets - have some snow, ice and slush on the pavement, particularly in shady areas.
VDOT crews have been working in subdivisions to treat slick areas with abrasives and plow roads where there is accumulation. The sun has helped to melt some of the snow and ice, but below-freezing temperatures will refreeze wet and slushy areas tonight.
Motorists should be aware that plowed secondary roads may still have ice and snow in many spots. Predicted warmer temperatures by Tuesday are expected to help melt the remaining ice and snow.
VDOT crews will continue to treat slick areas through the night and early morning hours.
Tonight's road forecast:
Wet and slushy areas, which are mainly on subdivision streets, will refreeze tonight. While the major roadways are in good shape, motorists need to watch out for slick spots on bridges and overpasses.
Morning commute forecast:
Prepare for icy conditions on neighborhood roads. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
