STATEWIDE WINTER ROAD CONDITIONS (5:30PM)
VDOT crews have made good progress with clearing snow and treating roads. Major roads are in good shape, with some secondary and neighborhood streets in moderate condition (snow or ice on pavement) following today's snow fall across much of the state.
VDOT urges motorists to drive with care tonight as wet and slushy areas will freeze when temperatures drop.
Below is a summary of statewide conditions:
Southwestern Virginia (trace to 7 inches of snow) - Interstates are clear, primary roads are mostly clear and secondary roads are in minor to moderate condition.
Salem and surrounding counties (5 to 10 inches of snow) - Interstates are mostly clear with minor to moderate conditions on primary roads. Secondary roads are in moderate condition, with some severe conditions reported in Bedford County.
Staunton and the Shenandoah Valley ( 1.5 to 9 inches of snow) - Most interstates are in minor condition with most primary and secondary roads in moderate condition.
Lynchburg and surrounding counties (1.5 to 5.5 inches of snow) - Most major roads are in minor condition and secondary roads are in moderate condition.
Richmond and Central Virginia (trace to 1.5 inches of snow) - Major roads are mostly clear with minor to moderate conditions on secondary roads.
Fredericksburg and Culpeper regions (trace to 5 inches of snow) - Most roads are in minor condition.
Northern Virginia (trace to 2 inches of snow) - Roads are mostly clear.
No snow conditions in the Hampton Roads region.
Road condition descriptions:
Clear - no conditions
Minor - bare pavement except for icy spots
Moderate - snow or ice on pavement
Severe - accumulation on roadways
