RICHMOND, Nov. 17, 2005 - The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) today approved the location for a new 10.4 mile north-south transportation link that would connect Manassas with the Dulles corridor. The location of the new road would be north of I-66 from the I-66 and Route 234 interchange to Route 50 in Loudoun County. This is the West Two (CD) alternative. The CTB directed the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to continue to work with state and federal agencies to minimize the impacts to environmentally sensitive areas, including wetlands.

“The board took a significant action today to improve mobility in a heavily congested region of the state by approving a location for the Tri-County Parkway,” said Acting VDOT Commissioner Gregory A. Whirley. “The project will provide a critical transportation link to heavily traveled communities and improve safety.”

VDOT presented four alternatives during three public hearings in May 2005, following the completion of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement.

The next steps in the process are the completion of the Final Environmental Impact Statement followed by a Record of Decision by the Federal Highway Administration. Those actions are expected to take place by the end next year.

The CTB also directed VDOT to solicit private sector proposals under the Public-Private Transportation Act (PPTA) to build the project. A possible way to pay for the Tri-County Parkway is through tolls under a public-private venture. State and federal funds are not sufficient to pay for the project. The cost estimate is $201 million.
