TRANSPORTATION BOARD WILL POSTPONE ACTION ON PROPOSED TOLL INCREASE FOR THE COLEMAN BRIDGE

RICHMOND – The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) will postpone until its June meeting consideration of a proposed toll increase on the George P. Coleman Bridge that carries Route 17 traffic over the York River between Yorktown and Gloucester County.

The CTB had scheduled to take action on the toll increase during its meeting tomorrow, but will take up the issue next month to give local governments more time to understand and review the proposed increase.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recommended to the CTB during its workshop today that the toll be increased from 50 cents to 85 cents for commuters. Current toll revenues are not sufficient to meet financial obligations.

The Coleman Bridge was rebuilt and widened at a total cost of $97 million in 1996. The project is financed by tolls.

The CTB will consider the toll increase during its June 16th meeting in Richmond.
