$136 MILLION DESIGN-BUILD CONTRACT AWARDED
Commonwealth Transportation Board action moves Charlottesville Bypass project forward
RICHMOND — The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) today awarded a $135,988,092 design-build contract for the Route 29 Charlottesville Bypass to Skanska-Branch/JMT of Virginia Beach. The contract includes engineering and construction services to complete the project.
“The CTB’s action today is an important step in moving this project to completion,” said VDOT Commissioner Greg Whirley. “The Route 29 Charlottesville Bypass will alleviate congestion and increase safety along Albemarle County’s important commercial corridor and help ensure the viability of this critical transportation corridor into the future.”
The Route 29 Charlottesville Bypass project will build a new 6.2-mile, four-lane, limited-access roadway from Route 29 just north of the South Fork Rivanna River to the Route 29/250 Bypass in Albemarle County. The project will improve efficiency and safety along the existing Route 29 corridor, address a gap in ongoing improvements to Route 29 through Central Virginia and provide an alternate route for regional traffic that will avoid the existing developed corridor along Route 29 north of the city of Charlottesville.
Skanska-Branch/JMT was the low bidder for the design-build contract; the seven bids ranged from $136 million to $214 million. Acquisition of right of way and construction are scheduled to begin after completion of the National Environmental Protection Act reevaluation process.
