VIRGINIA ROAD CONDITIONS ARE IMPROVING – 6:00 PM
All major roads clear, snow conditions in the west, some flooded secondary roads in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and Staunton regions
RICHMOND – Road conditions are improving as flood waters go down. At this hour, all interstate and major roads are open. About 250 roads, just about all secondary roads, are closed mostly in the Northern Virginia, Culpeper and Staunton regions. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are reopening roads as water recedes and power lines are cleared.
VDOT urges motorists to stay away from downed trees and debris in roadways because they may be tangled up with power lines. VDOT is working in close coordination with power teams to safely remove trees. Please report downed trees and debris in roadways by calling VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623). Report downed power lines by contacting your local power company.
In Northern Virginia, signal lights may be down in some areas. Drivers should treat these intersections as four-way stops.
Snow has been the challenge in parts of western Virginia, particularly in the higher elevations of southwestern Virginia. VDOT crews plowing snow in combination with declining snow fall has helped to clear many roads this afternoon, most of them in minor condition with patches of ice and snow.
