TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE TO OCCUR JUNE 7 AT MAURY RIVER BRIDGE ON I-81 NORTHBOUND LANES IN ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Progress is being made on the Interstate 81 Maury River bridge construction project. On Tuesday, June 7 I-81 northbound traffic will be switched to the newly constructed bridge over the Maury River. According to officials at the bridge site, the traffic switch will take several hours to accomplish. Motorists may experience travel delays in the work zone as this shift takes place. Lane shifting activities will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday and may last until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Work being performed for the lane shift involved moving traffic barriers, some paving and application of lane markings.

As construction workers adjust the lane setup, motorists are asked to drive through the project with extreme caution and observe all posted speed limits. State police will be on site to help enforce the speed limit.

The I-81 Maury River bridge project was awarded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board on January 15, 2004 to Orders Construction Co. Inc. of St. Albans, W.Va. for $17.7 million. The project involves replacing both the northbound and southbound bridges. A Smart Work Zone is also in place at the project where the VDOT Smart Traffic Center in Staunton can monitor the bridge using traffic cameras and traffic timing technology. The Staunton STC can then detect accidents and traffic congestion and deploy appropriate messages on electronic message boards and the 511 telephone and Web site at 511Virginia.org. A Safety Service Patrol also monitors the Buffalo Creek bridge project and the Maury River bridge project to assist motorists who are stopped along the roadway shoulders. The Maury River bridge project is scheduled for completion in the winter of 2006.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones. For further information on the location of work zones throughout the state, call the Highway Helpline at 1-800-367-ROAD. Traffic alerts and traveler information can also be obtained by dialing 511. In areas where 511 is unavailable, dial 1-800-578-4111. TTY users can call 711 to obtain these services. Traffic alerts and traveler information also are available at 511Virginia.org.
