VDOT TO HOLD HARRISONBURG SOUTHEAST CONNECTOR CITIZEN INFORMATION MEETING
Meeting will show conceptual alternatives for traffic needs
The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a citizen information meeting for the Harrisonburg Southeast Connector Study from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, March 24 at Turner Ashby High School located at 800 North Main Street in Bridgewater. The meeting will be held in the high school commons area. The purpose of the meeting is to get citizens input on transportation problems and potential solutions to these problems.
VDOT is preparing the study in response to requests from the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County as well as state legislation passed in 2000 that earmarked funding for the study. The meeting is the second in a series of meetings related to the study. The first was held in July 2004, when over 200 citizens provided their thoughts on transportation issues and other concerns.
Citizens can come in during the meeting hours and discuss the project on a one-on-one basis with VDOT officials. Written comments can be submitted at the meeting or within 10 days after the meeting date to Mr. Jim Clarke, Location Studies Project Manager, Environmental Division, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1401 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219. Oral comments can be recorded at the hearing with the assistance of a court reporter.
The study area extends southeast of the City of Harrisonburg between Route 11 near Mount Crawford and Route 33 near Route 276. The study is evaluating transportation problems and solutions, including improvements to east/west mobility and a need to meet future traffic demand across and within the study area.
Also, VDOT will present for citizen review and comment a range of conceptual alternatives for further study to meet those needs. Options under consideration include a No-Build alternative, minor and major improvements to existing roads, and highways on new location. Maps will be available in the meeting room that will show a variety of corridor road alignments that are among the conceptual alternatives.
Input received at the upcoming meeting will be used to further refine the alternative solutions considered in this study. A final set of candidate alternatives will be evaluated in detail in a Draft Environmental Impact Statement, which will be completed in fall 2005. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement will be available for public review and comment. A public hearing will be held to receive further citizen comment. Following the hearing, the study will be submitted to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for its location decision .
