OVERALL BRIDGE BECOMES THE CORPORAL LARRY E. SMEDLEY (USMC) MEMORIAL BRIDGE
Ribbon Cutting for New Bridges at Overall Run and Jeremy’s Run on Route 340

STAUNTON – The new bridges over Overall Run and Jeremy’s Run on Route 340 were celebrated at a combined bridge naming and ribbon cutting event, held on November 17.

As part of legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly and signed in June by Governor Tim Kaine, the new bridge at Overall Run was named in honor of the late Corporal Larry E. Smedley of the United States Marine Corps.  He is a recipient of the Medal of Honor resulting from actions during the Vietnam War in December 1967.  Mrs. Mary Smith, Corporal Smedley’s mother, was at the event and was given a replica of the sign that now stands at either end of the bridge with Corporal Smedley’s name on it.  Mrs. Smith was joined by her daughter and Corporal Smedley’s sister, Vickie Smedley.

The event also included a formal ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of construction of the two new bridges.  The bridge over Overall Run had a contract value of $11,258,417.95 and was completed on July 31, 2009.  General Excavation Inc. of Warrenton was the prime contractor.  The bridge is just under 300 feet long.  Lanes are 12-feet wide with four-foot paved shoulders and a 10-foot graded shoulder.  The shoulders are paved 10-feet wide in sections with guardrail.  A turn lane for Route 665 was constructed at the southern approach to the bridge as part of the project.

The bridge over Jeremy’s Run is 446 feet long. Lanes are 12-feet wide with four-foot paved shoulders and include a 10-foot graded shoulder.  The shoulders are paved 10-feet wide in sections with guardrail. A right-turn and a left-turn lane was constructed for traffic using Route 662 located south of the bridge. The left-turn lane is a center lane on the bridge.  Right turn lanes were constructed at the intersections of Route 699 and Route 700.  The contract value was $7,674.952.55 and was completed by General Excavation Inc.

Speaking at the even were Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David Ekern, Virginia General Assembly Delegate Clay Athey, Tommy LaFrance Chairman of the Page County Board of Supervisors and Archie A. Fox, Chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors.  Also speaking was Judge Tony Johnson who served with Corporal Smedley in United States Marine Corps.

VDOT crews unveiled the new signs at the Corporal Larry E. Smedley (USMC) Memorial Bridge at Overall Run immediately after the ceremony.
