TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MARCH 16-20, 2009

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 220 - Slope work along Route 220 between Clifton Forge and Iron Gate. All lanes will be closed on Sunday, March 15 from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Suggested detour : Interstate 81 and Interstate 64. Traveling locally between I-64 at Clifton Forge and I-81 use exit I-64 at exit 21, in the Low Moor area. At the interchange use Route 696 (Selma Low Moor Road to Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) to Route 621 (Roaring Run Road) to Route 615 (Craig Creek Road) to Route 220.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 (Main Street, Toms Brook) – Signal reconstruction on flashing signals at Route 11 and Route 653 (Creek Road) / 1502 (Hillcrest Road) in Toms Brook in Shenandoah County. Intermittent lane closures Monday to Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated activation of new flashing signals is late March.
* (NEW) Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Northbound left lane closure from 0.49 miles north of Route 641 to Route 601 east for tree removal operations. Roadway will be restricted to 12 feet. Work begins Monday, March 16 with estimated completion set for Friday, March 20 at 3:30 p.m. weather permitting. Hours will be 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 11, New Market – Signal work at Route 1002 (Old Cross Road), large trucks should use alternate route. Signal will not be operational at this location during this work. Flagger traffic control. Work is 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 15

* Route 340 (Jeremy’s Run) – Bridge work. Periodic lane closures. Relocation of Route 700 intersection with Route 340. Traffic will be re-routed to new roadway north of existing Jeremy’s Run Bridge. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Work hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Flagger traffic control. The speed limit will remain 45 miles per hour throughout the project limits.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 (North Fork Bridge project) – Bridge construction from Route 637 and Route 55 (Strasburg Road). Speed limit reduced to 25 mph. Motorists should be alert for lane closures at the North Fork Bride project located on Route 340/522 in the Front Royal area. The right southbound lane of Route 340/522 will be closed, restricting traffic to one southbound lane and one northbound lane throughout the project. The closures will begin at 7 a.m. on March 16 and last for two weeks. The lane closures will be 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The lane closures will allow the construction of the remaining portion of the bridge deck surface. Travelers going to Front Royal, exiting Interstate 66 at exit 6 onto Route 340/522, should expect delays. As an alternative route into Front Royal, motorists can exit I-66 in the Linden area at exit 13 on Route 79 and then head west on Route 55 or motorists can exit Interstate 81 in the Strasburg area at exit 296 and travel east on Route 55. Motorists should expect delays and use extreme caution when traveling in the work zone.
