TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 21-25, 2009
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, herbicidal spraying. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Bridge deck replacement from 2.53 miles west of Route 159 to 0.92 miles east of Route 602. Periodic lane and shoulder closures. Traffic control by portable signals and concrete barrier, lane width restrictions are 10-feet. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon. Estimated completion is mid November.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 629 (Douthat Road) – Pipe installation from 1 mile south of Bath County line. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing.
* Various roads – Patching. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control.

BATH COUNTY

* Route 601, northbound and southbound – Bridge over Big Run. Pipe culvert work. Shoulder closure or single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, mowing, litter and debris removal. Sunday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Litter and debris removal. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 182.3, northbound and southbound – Bridge painting. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.
* Mile marker 219.1, northbound and southbound – Bridge painting. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Fancy Hill) – I-81 overpass bridges. Bridge painting. Alternating lane closures, flagger traffic control, Monday at noon to Friday at noon.
* Route 60, eastbound and westbound – Paving from Buena Vista City eastern limits to Amherst County line. Flagger traffic control and pilot truck, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. Periodic single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Completion is in September 13, 2010.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 606 (Raphine Road) – Paving from Route 917 to Route 613. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, pilot truck. Thursday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 608 (Forge Road) – Ditch cleaning, from Route 60, eastbound. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 612 (Blue Grass Trail) – Pipe replacement from Route 667 (Moores Creek Road) to Route 644 (Wide Gap Road). Road closed, Sept. 29, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes.
* Various roads – Brush cutting. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Grading, mowing, litter and debris removal.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Litter and debris removal. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 219.1, northbound and southbound – Bridge over Route 654. Bridge painting. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.
* Mile marker 222 to 225, northbound and southbound – Bridge over Lewis Creek. Bridge repairs. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Possible lane closure, Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* (NEW) Route 254 – Mowing, Monday to Friday.
* Route 262, westbound – Construction of acceleration lane extension from Middlebrook Avenue to Route 262. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Estimated completion is October.
* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Route 250 to Delphine Avenue for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Expect minor delays from Broad Street to Sixth Street for construction work. Seventh Street closed from Winchester Avenue to Commerce Street, June 1 to January 2010, and Sixth Street closed from Delphine Avenue to Commerce Street, July 6 to late January 2010, for retaining wall construction, bridge and utility work. Estimated completion is November 2011.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 613 – Patching and shoulder repair from Route 646 to Route 612, Monday to Friday.
* Route 774, northbound and southbound (Cline River Road, New Hope) – Bridge over Middle River. Bridge replacement activities from Route 608 (Battlefield Road) to Route 775 (Craig Shop Road). Road closed from Mar. 30 to Nov. 13. Suggested detour: Northbound traffic take Route 608 to Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road) to Route 775 to Route 774. Southbound traffic take reverse of northbound detour.
* Route 794 (Sangers Lane), eastbound and westbound – Bridge over Christians Creek, from Route 792 (Basley Road) to Route 642 (Barren Ridge Road). Bridge replacement. Road closed,  24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, April 27 to Dec. 16. Suggested detour: Westbound traffic, take Route 792 south to Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) east to Route 642 north to Route 794. Eastbound traffic, take reverse of westbound detour.
* Route 802 – Rural rustic from Route 252 to Route 693. Road closed to thru traffic. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 22.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pavement marking. Estimated completion is Sept. 26.
* (NEW) Various roads – Patching, mowing, brush cutting. Signs posted, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 250 (Mountain Turnpike) – Mowing from Monterey Town limits to West Virginia State line, Monday to Friday.
* Route 250 – Shoulder work from Route 614 to Augusta County line. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday.

Secondary Roads
* Route 600 (Upper Back Creek) – Ditching from Route 84 to 3 miles north of Route 84. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 607 – Bridge maintenance at Route 220, Monday to Thursday.
* Route 607 (Big Valley Road) – Ditching from Route 220 to Route 606. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 1010 (Highlands Court) – Spot leveling from Route 636 to dead end. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263, northbound and southbound – Mowing, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Left lane closed, Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263, northbound and southbound – Fence repair, mowing, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 42 (Main Street, Broadway) – Broadway High School Homecoming. Road closed from Route 1421 west (Springbrook Road) to Route 42 north (Main Street) to Route 259 west (West Lee Street) to Route 1413 (Holly Hill Street) ending at J Frank Hilyard Middle School. Flagger traffic control, Friday, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
* Route 42, northbound and southbound – Pavement line marking from Route 1151 to 2.23 miles north of Route 778. Periodic shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 211 (New Market Road) – Cable installation from Route 960 (Water Wheel Road) to Shenandoah City limits. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Grade/slope work from Route 11 (Main Street, Mount Crawford) to Route 696 (Kiser Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Heritage Day Celebration. Road closed from Route 42 (Timber Way) to Route 9366 (Plains Elementary School entrance). Flagger traffic control, Sept. 26, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Route 843 (Cemetery Road) – Road work at Route 641 (Cave Hill Road) and Route 650 (Power Dam Road). Intermittent single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 867 (North River Road) – Construction entrance from Route 11 (Main Street) to Route 693 (Fairview Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Various Routes – Bridge maintenance. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263 to 298, northbound and southbound – Fence repair, shoulder repair, median work, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Mile marker 270 to 298, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs. Single-lane traffic, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 (Mount Jackson) – Brush cutting.
* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Maurertown) – Safety and drainage improvement work. Drain, grade, asphalt and utilities. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Estimated completion is June 2010.
* (NEW) Route 42 (Mount Jackson) – Brush cutting.
* (NEW) Route 211 (Old Cross Road) – Base repair work from Route 1003 to Route 211. Road closed, 7:30 a.m., Tuesday to 3 p.m., Wednesday. Suggested detour: From Route 211, take Route 211 east to Route 11 south to Route 1007 (West Lee Street) to route 1003 north. From Route 1003, take Route 1007 (East Lee Street) to Route 11 north to Route 211 west.

Secondary Roads
* Route T1003 (Cadet Road, New Market) – Water and sewer line work from Route 211, westbound to Route 1009 (Stuart Street). Portions of road closed to thru traffic. Estimated completion is late September. Base repair work from Route 1003 to Route 211 (Old Cross Road). Road closed, 7:30 a.m., Tuesday to 3 p.m., Wednesday. Suggested detour: From Route 211, take Route 211 east to Route 11 south to Route 1007 (West Lee Street) to route 1003 north. * Route 37, southbound – Paving from Route 50 to Route 642. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (NEW) Route 522, northbound (Winchester) – Paving, striping and shoulder work from Route 746 to Route 681. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Papermill Road (Winchester) – Road reconstruction from .06 mile south of Weems Lane to .28 mile north of South Pleasant Valley. Suggested alternate route: Weems Lane to Roosevelt Boulevard to Papermill Road. Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 608 (Wardensville Grade) – Bridge repairs from Route 616 to Route 50. Single-lane traffic, traffic control. Estimated completion is mid September.
* Route 679 (Indian Hollow Road) – Rural rustic from 1.50 miles west of Route 608 to 0.50 mile east of Route 600, flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is mid October.

Interstate 66

* Mile marker 0 to 14.82, eastbound and westbound – Bridge deck maintenance. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for eastbound lanes and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for westbound lanes.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Traffic signal upgrade at the I-66 eastbound and westbound ramps. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the work zone.
* Route 340/522 (North Fork Bridge project) – Speed limit raised to 35 mph.

Secondary Roads
* Route 609 (Ritenhour Hollow Road) – Partially collapsed pipe overflow, from Route 627 (Reliance Road) to Route 736 (Molly Campbell Lane). Road closed. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.
* Various roads – Drainage work. Monday to Friday.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 7, westbound – Bridge over Shenandoah River. Bridge deck maintenance from 0.08 mile east of Route 603 to 0.05 mile west of Route 606. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Shoulder repair, grading. Monday to Friday.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
