TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 26-30, 2009
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 43 to 38, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder repair. Right lane closed, Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, herbicidal spraying, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Bridge deck replacement from 2.53 miles west of Route 159 to 0.92 miles east of Route 602. Periodic lane and shoulder closures. Traffic temporarily controlled by flaggers during the day. Traffic control by portable signals and concrete barrier, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Lane width restrictions are 10-feet. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to noon. Estimated completion is mid November.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Drainage work, patching. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8a.m. to 4 p.m. Lane closures controlled by flaggers.

Primary Roads
* Route 60, eastbound and westbound – Pavement marking from Buena Vista City eastern limits to Amherst County line. Flagger traffic control and pilot truck, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. Periodic single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Completion is in September 13, 2010.
* (NEW) Route 56 – Shoulder work from Route 608 to the Nelson County line. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting, patching. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 87 to 99, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal, Monday Wednesday and Friday.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Litter and debris removal. Monday, to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 219.1, northbound and southbound – Bridge over Route 654. Bridge painting. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 227 to 229, northbound and southbound – Bridge over Middle River. Bridge repairs. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Possible lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities. Road closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue. Eastbound lane closed 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Westbound lane open to traffic during construction. Lane closure to begin in late October or early November. Lane closure beginning date announced in the near future. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:


• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262.  Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection.  Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
• At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection.  Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.


* (NEW) Route 256 – Street sweeping, Monday to Friday.
* Route 262 – Road work from Route 11 to Route 262, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is Nov. 20.
* Route 262, westbound – Construction of acceleration lane extension from Middlebrook Avenue to Route 262. Lane closures, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is October 16.
* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Route 250 to Delphine Avenue for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening. Delphine Avenue is closed to thru traffic between Main Street (Route 250) and Hopeman Parkway. Delphine Avenue is open to local traffic only between Main Street (Route 250) and Seventh Street, and between Hopeman Parkway and Sixth
Street. Detours are posted. Estimated date of road opening is January 8, 2010. Estimated completion of project is November 2011.
* Various roads – Litter and debris removal.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 622 – Building causeway around bridge from Waynesboro City limits to Route 950. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday.
* Route 693 – Patching from Route 701 to Route 662. Flagger traffic control, Wednesday to Friday.
* Route 694 (Virginia Institute Way) – Rural Rustic Project. Road reconstruction from Route 711 to Route 712. Road closed to thru traffic, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 2.
* (NEW) Route 746 – Tree removal from Route 616 to Route 745. Road closed, Monday to Friday.
* Route 774, northbound and southbound (Cline River Road, New Hope) – Bridge over Middle River. Bridge replacement activities between Route 608 (Battlefield Road) and Route 775 (Craig Shop Road). Road closed from Mar. 30 to Nov. 13. Detour provided.
* Route 794 (Sangers Lane), eastbound and westbound – Bridge over Christians Creek, from Route 792 (Basley Road) to Route 642 (Barren Ridge Road). Bridge replacement. Road closed,  24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, until Dec. 16. Detour provided.
* (NEW) Route 853 – Patching from Route 701 to Route 662. Flagger traffic control, Wednesday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 9026 – Ditch cleaning form Route 701 to Route 701. Flagger traffic control, Thursday and Friday.
* (NEW) Various roads –Brush cutting, scraping, adding stone, pothole repairs. Signs posted, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Mowing, machining dirt roads. Mobile operation, Monday to Friday.

HIGHLAND COUNTY

* (NEW) Route 250 – Boom axing from Mountain Turnpike to intersection of Route 640, Monday.

* (NEW) Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – VMI Cadet March, Nov. 22, 7:30 a.m. to noon. Marching route from south Rockingham County line to north Rockingham County line and entering Town of New Market.
* (NEW) Route 42 (Main Street – Town of Broadway) – HalloweenFest. Road closed from Route 259 (Broadway Avenue) to Route 259 (Lee Street), Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Detour provided.
* Route 211 (New Market Road) – Cable installation from Route 960 (Water Wheel Road) to Shenandoah City limits. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 712 (West Mosby Road) – Overhead work from Route 712 (Harrisonburg City limits) to route 701 (Pike Church Road). Shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Route 726 and Harrisonburg City Limits. Eastbound lane and shoulder closure, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Grade/slope work from Route 11 (Main Street, Mount Crawford) to Route 696 (Kiser Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 732 (Eberly Road) – Road widening 0.70 miles east of F238 (Buffalo Drive) to 0.20 miles west of Route 717 (Indian Trail Road). Flagger traffic control, Friday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 793 (Endless Caverns Road) – Intersection upgrade from Route 11 (North Valley Pike) to Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81

* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Maurertown) – Safety and drainage improvement work. Drain, grade, asphalt and utilities. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Estimated completion is June 2010.
* (NEW) Route 11 (Mount Jackson) – Asphalt repair.
* (NEW) Route 11 (Toms Brook) – Brush cutting.
* (NEW) Route 55 (Toms Brook) – Brush cutting.

Secondary Roads
* Route 703, eastbound and westbound – Bridge over Swover Creek. Pipe culvert work. Shoulder closure or single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work dependant on weather.
* Route T1003 (Cadet Road, New Market) – Water and sewer line work from Route 211, westbound to Route 1009 (Stuart Street). Portions of road closed to thru traffic. Estimated completion is late October.
