TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF JANUARY 4 – 8, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. Expect periodic overnight lane closures. Estimated completion fall 2012.

Primary Roads
* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. New traffic pattern. Periodic single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is September 2010.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Brush cutting, tree cutting, pipe replacement, shoulder work and patching potholes. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Various roads – Grading dirt roads.

AUGUSTA COUNTY

Primary Roads
* Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities. The eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue. Eastbound lane closed 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The pedestrian detour is from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street. Signs are posted. Storm drain work with flagger traffic control will occur at the intersection of North Augusta Avenue and Churchville Avenue. Westbound lane of Churchville Avenue is open to traffic during construction. Speed limit in the project area reduced to 25 miles-per-hour. Central Avenue closed to thru traffic for storm drain relocation, Monday to Friday. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:
• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262.  Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection.  Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
• At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection.  Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.   
* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Route 250 to Delphine Avenue for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening. Delphine Avenue is closed to thru traffic between Main Street (Route 250) and Hopeman Parkway. Delphine Avenue is open to local traffic only between Main Street (Route 250) and Seventh Street, and between Hopeman Parkway and Sixth Street. Detours are posted. Estimated date of road opening is January 8, 2010.
* Various roads – Pothole patching. Mobile lane closures, Monday to Thursday.

Secondary Roads
* Route 693 – Bridge over railway. Bridge maintenance from 0.06 mile north of Route 703 south. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 694 – Road construction from Route 693 (Bethel Green Road) to Route 695 (Arborhill Road), Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is January 22, 2010.
* Route 835 – Tree cutting from Route 728 to Route 736. Road closed to thru traffic, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Various roads – Grading, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Clearing with boom axe, Monday to Friday. Signs posted.
* Various roads – Bridge maintenance, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Brush cutting, Monday to Friday. Traffic controlled by flaggers.
* Various roads – Machining dirt roads. Mobile lane closures, Monday to Friday.

* Route 600 (Upper Back Creek) – Brush cutting from Route 84 to Route 250 with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday.
* Route 607 (Big Valley Road) – Ditching from intersection of 220 and 606, Monday to Friday. Flaggers controlling traffic.
* Various roads – Brush cutting and patching potholes. Traffic controlled by signs.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Directional bore from Route 710 (Greendale Road) to Route 710 (Reservoir Street). Right shoulder closed, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Entrance and utility work from Route 950 (Walton Way) to the I-81 Interchange. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 712 (West Mosby Road) – Overhead work from Route 712 (Harrisonburg City limits) to route 701 (Pike Church Road). Shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Route 726 and Harrisonburg City Limits. Eastbound lane and shoulder closure, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 1173 (Nutmeg Court) and Route 726 (Erickson Avenue). Intermittent lane closures and flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is late February 2010.
* Route 793 (Endless Caverns Road) – Intersection upgrade from Route 11 (North Valley Pike) to Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 867 (North River Road) – Entrance construction from Route 11 (Main Street) to Route 693 (Fairview Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 981 (Rockingham. Pike) – Turn lane installation from Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 829 (Independent Road). Right shoulder closure, intermittent detour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work zone is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Maurertown) – Safety and drainage improvement work from just south of Diamond Valley entrance to just north of Route 654 (Zion Church Road). Drain, grade, asphalt and utilities. Daylight operations with varying lane closures. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Estimated completion is June 2010.
