TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MARCH 22-26, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64  

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, debris removal, pothole and pavement repair, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

* Various locations – Guardrail repair as needed, 7 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

* (NEW) Mile Marker 11 Bridge painting eastbound and westbound lane closures 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Various roads – Pothole patching. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.

* Various roads – Brush and tree cutting.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

Interstate 81

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, litter pickup, pothole and pavement repair, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

* Various locations – Guardrail repair and litter removal as needed, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound and southbound– Truck climbing lane project. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 pm to 7 am. Estimated completion fall 2012.

* (NEW) Mile marker 195 to 199 – Possible shoulder closure due to construction activity on Route 716 over Interstate.  Possible night lane closures with traffic control used as needed. 

 

Primary Roads

* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. New traffic pattern. Periodic single-lane traffic withflagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 am to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is September 2010.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 716 under I-81 – Construction activity at the Interstate 81 overpass with traffic control used as needed.

* Various roads – Brush and tree cutting.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.  Work is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Various roads – Grading dirt roads and shoulder work, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Various roads – Pothole patching. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

* (NEW) Mile marker 94 eastbound – Tree removal. Right shoulder closure Tuesday to Thursday.

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, litter and debris removal, pothole and pavement repair, 7 am to 7 p.m. weekdays.

* Various locations – Guardrail repair; litter removal as needed, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday

 

 

Interstate 81

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, litter pickup, pothole and pavement repair, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

* Various locations – Guardrail repair and litter removal as needed, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

 

Primary Roads

* Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities. The eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue. Eastbound lane closed 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The pedestrian detour is from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street. Signs are posted. Expect intermittent delays from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street due to utility installation work. Intermittent flagger traffic control for work in westbound lane. Speed limit in the project area reduced to 25 miles-per-hour. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:

  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262.  Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
  • At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.  

* (NEW) Route 252 – Patching from Route 701 to Route 682.  Traffic controlled by signs and flaggers.

* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Broad Street to Sixth Street for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening. Expect delays Monday to Saturday. Seventh Street closed to through traffic from Winchester Avenue to Commerce Street. Sixth Street closed from Delphine Avenue to Commerce Street for retaining wall construction, bridge and utility work. Estimated completion is November 2011. Detours are posted.

* (NEW) Various roads – Litter and debris pickup, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

* Various roads – Pothole patching and dead animal removal as needed. Mobile lane closures.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 693 – Bridge over railroad. Bridge maintenance from 0.03 mile south of Route 703 north. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday 7 am to 5 pm.

* Route 694 – Road construction from Route 693 (Bethel Green Road) to Route 695 (Arborhill Road), Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. Estimated completion is April 2.

* Route 735 – Bridge deck repair from Route 728 to Route 736. Road closed Monday to Friday.

* Route 907 – Bridge over Christians Creek is closed.  No reopening date has been scheduled.

* (NEW) Route 1103 – Bridge deck repair on Route 1103 west of Route 42, Craigsville Tuesday.

* (NEW) Various Bridges – Bridge deck maintenance Wednesday and Thursday.

* (NEW) Various roads – Filling potholes on dirt roads with traffic controlled by signs and flaggers.

* Various roads – Pothole patching, tree removal and machining dirt roads. Mobile lane closures, Monday to Friday.

* Various roads – Brush cutting,

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

No lane closures reported.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 616 – Bridge deck repair on Route 616 off Route 250. Tuesday.

* (NEW) Various roads – Sweeping bridges, pothole patching, and machining dirt roads with flaggers controlling traffic.

* Various roads – Brush cutting andpatching potholes. Traffic controlled by signs.

* Various roads – Pothole patching and stone stabilization.  Flagger traffic control.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 242.15 to 252.50, northbound and southbound – Median barrier project. Remove and replace existing median guardrail with high tension cable median barrier. Upgrade substandard guardrail along outside travel lanes. Temporary right shoulder closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Temporary right shoulder closures during night-time hours, Monday to Thursday.

 

 

Primary Roads

* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Signal light installation from Route 981 (Rockingham Pike) to Route 602 (East Point Road). Right shoulder closed, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 42 (Town of Dayton) – Waterline repair on Main Street between Route 290 (College Street) and Route 1209 (Thompson Street). Intermittent shoulder closures with flagger traffic control Monday to Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 42 (Town of Dayton) – Signal upgrade construction at the intersection of Route 42 (John Wayland Hwy) and Route 290 (Huffman Drive). Possible delays.

* Route 42 (Warm Springs Road) – Cable work from Bridgewater Town limits south to Augusta County line. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) Cable work from Route 825 (South River Road) to Route 655 (Lawyer Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.215 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits.  Be alert for intermittent lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Completion is Jan. 27, 2012.

* (NEW) Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Sign installation and clearing with intermittent lane closures along road widening project. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 pm. 

* Route 340 (Eastside Highway) – Directional bore, Town of Grottoes. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Entrance and utility work from Route 950 (Walton Way) to I-81 Interchange. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 712 (West Mosby Road) – Overhead electrical work from Route 712 (Harrisonburg City limits) to route 701 (Pike Church Road). Shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Route 726 and Harrisonburg City Limits. Eastbound lane and shoulder closure, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 1173 (Nutmeg Court) and Route 726 (Erickson Avenue). Intermittent lane closures and flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 793 (Endless Caverns Road) – Intersection upgrade from Route 11 (North Valley Pike) to Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

* Route 867 (North River Road) – Entrance construction from Route 11 (Main Street) to Route 693 (Fairview Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 981 (Rockingham. Pike) – Turn lane installation from Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 829 (Independent Road). Right shoulder closure, intermittent detour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work zone is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, litter pickup, pothole and pavement repair, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

 

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Maurertown) – Safety and drainage improvement work from just south of Diamond Valley entrance to just north of Route 654 (Zion Church Road). Drain, grade, asphalt and utilities. Daylight operations with varying lane closures. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Estimated completion is June 2010.

* (NEW) Various roads – Sweeping bridges and intersections. Patching potholes.

 

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 744 (Deer Rapids) – Bridge over Shenandoah River. Bridge work from 0.30-mile east of Route 648 to 0.45-mile east of Route 648. Traffic controlled by flaggers as needed during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion is April 14, 2011.

* (NEW) Various roads –  Pipe cleaning, scraping, ditching, debris removal, and pothole patching.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, debris removal, pothole and pavement repair, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 522 (North Frederick Pike), northbound and southbound – Signal upgrade construction on ramps at intersection of Route 37 (Winchester Bypass).

* (NEW) Various roads – Patching potholes.

* Route 727 (Belle Grove Road) – Bridge deck work located 0.04 miles west from Route 624.  Work is Monday to Wednesday.
