TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF APRIL 26-30, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64  

* Various locations – Bridge and ramp sweeping, mobile work zone, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various locations – Ditch and inlet cleaning, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

 

Primary Roads                                       

* (NEW) Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Bridge repairs from 1.5 mile west of Route 159 to 1.0 mile east of Route 602.  Single lane closures with flagger traffic control.  Work is 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Sweeping at intersections, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Single lane closures with mobile work zone.

* (NEW) Various roads – Litter removal.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek.  Single lane traffic with stop and proceed sign. Single lane traffic will be in place 24 hours-a-day until mid-October.  Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.  Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.

* (NEW) Route 1011 – Bridge replacement in Selma area between Route 1002 and Route 1003.  Road will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Detour signs in place.

* Various roads – Patching. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Sweeping at intersections, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Single lane closures with mobile work zone.

* (NEW) Various roads – Litter removal.

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Various roads – Intersection sweeping, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., mobile work zone.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads – Patching. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – patching intersection sweeping, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Mobile work zones.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Various locations – Bridge and ramp sweeping, mobile work zone, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various locations – Ditch and inlet cleaning, guardrail repair as needed, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

 

Interstate 81

* Various locations – Bridge and ramp sweeping, mobile work zone, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various locations – Ditch and inlet cleaning, limb removal, crossover repair, guardrail repair as needed, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

* Various locations – Hydro-seeding damaged areas, Monday to Thursday, 24-hour operations.

* Various locations – Limb removal, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound and southbound– Truck climbing lane project. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Single lane closure, Monday, April 12, 7 pm to 7 am. Estimated completion fall 2012.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. New traffic pattern. Periodic single-lane traffic withflagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 am to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is September 2010.

* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Sweeping roads from Route 763 (Lincoln Road) to the Lexington City Limits.  Nighttime operation from 12 midnight to 8 a.m.  Single lane closure with mobile traffic control.

* Route 60 (East Midland Trail) – Sweeping roads from Lexington City limits to Buena Vista City limits.  Nighttime operation from 12 midnight to 8 a.m.  Single lane closure with mobile traffic control.

 

 

Secondary Roads

*  Route 610 (Plank Road) – Road closed March 29 to April 29 for Cedar Creek Bridge replacement located 0.6-mile south of Route 692 (Cedar Creek Road) to 0.9-mile north of Route 693 (High Bridge Church Road). Detour uses Route 692 and Route 693 in Rockbridge County.  Route 692 is detour for Botetourt County.  Detour and road signs will be posted.

* (NEW) Route 610 (Plank Road) – Road will be closed at the Route 693 (High Bridge Church Road) intersection for a bridge replacement project at Spring Gap Creek.  The closure will begin on May 3 and last until June 24.  Motorists may detour this area by using Route 692 and Route 693.  Detour and road closed signs will be place in the work zone area.

 

* Various roads – Brush and tree cutting .Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.  Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various roads – Pothole patching, spot patching and paving.. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various roads – Grading.

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

No lane closures reported.

 

Interstate 81

* Various locations – Bridge and ramp sweeping, mobile work zone, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Various locations – Hydro-seeding damaged areas, Monday to Thursday, 24-hour operations.

* Various locations – Limb removal, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities.  Albemarle Street closed through April 28 for underground utility installation. Intermittent traffic interruption on North Central Avenue.  North Lewis Street is open to northbound traffic only.  Albemarle Street will be closed through April 16 for underground utility installation.

The eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue. Eastbound lane closed 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The pedestrian detour is from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street. Signs are posted. Expect intermittent delays from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street due to utility installation work. Intermittent flagger traffic control for work in westbound lane. Speed limit in the project area reduced to 25 miles-per-hour. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:

  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262.  Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
  • At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.

 * (NEW) Route 11 – Spot leveling from Route 662 to Route 1211, Tuesday.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Broad Street to Sixth Street for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening. Expect delays Monday to Saturday. Seventh Street closed to through traffic from Winchester Avenue to Commerce Street. Sixth Street closed from Delphine Avenue to Commerce Street for retaining wall construction, bridge and utility work. Estimated completion is June 2010. Detours are posted.

* (NEW) Route 340 – Spot leveling from Route 655 to Route 11, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – Litter and debris pickup, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

* Various roads – Pothole patching. Mobile lane closures.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 608 – Roadway patching, Route 652 to Rockbridge county line.  Monday to Friday,   Flagger traffic control.

* (NEW) Route 693 – Bridge over C&O railroad will have maintenance.  Single lane traffic possible from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

* Route 694 (Chestnut Ridge Road)– Rustic road construction from Route 695 to Route 693.  Road closed 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.  Work is April 5 to May 21, 2010.

* (NEW) Route 703 – Patching from Route 42 to Route 876.  Flagger traffic control

* Route 746 – Tree removal work.  Road will be closed during work and reopened at the end of the day.

* Route 801 – Bridge work.  Work zone is located between Route 250 and Route 835.  Road will be closed to through traffic from April 5 at 8 a.m. until April 30 at 5 p.m.

* Route 898 – Roadway patching from Route 608 to end of state maintenance.  Monday to Friday, flagger traffic control.

* Route 907 – Bridge over Christians Creek is closed.  No reopening date has been scheduled.

* Various roads – Machining dirt roads. Mobile lane closures, Monday to Friday.

* Various roads – Brush cutting and machining non-hard surface roads, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Traffic controlled with signs.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Route 250 – Patching from Monterey to West Virginia state line.  Work is Monday to Friday.  Flagger traffic control.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 600 north – Brush cutting from gravel road to Route 250, Monday to Friday.  Flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – Brush cutting andmachining dirt roads. Traffic controlled by signs.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 237.5 to 263 northbound and southbound – Vegetation cutting and trimming, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Mile marker 242.15 to 252.50, northbound and southbound – Median barrier project. Remove and replace existing median guardrail with high tension cable median barrier. Upgrade substandard guardrail along outside travel lanes. Temporary right shoulder closures northbound and southbound during daylight hours, Monday to Friday to remove and replace existing guardrail. Temporary lane closures northbound and southbound 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday to Thursday to remove and replace existing guardrail.

* Mile marker 245.5 to 245.4 southbound – Underground fiber optic cable work, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Signal light installation from Route 981 (Rockingham Pike) to Route 602 (East Point Road). Right shoulder closed, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 42 (John Wayland Highway) Town of Dayton – Signal upgrade construction at Route 290 (Huffman Drive). Possible delays.

* Route 42 (Warm Springs Pike) – Cable work from Bridgewater Town limits south to Augusta County line. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) Cable work from Route 825 (South River Road) to Route 655 (Lawyer Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits.  Storm pipe work. Be alert for possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Entrance and utility work from Route 950 (Walton Way) to I-81 Interchange. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City Limits. Eastbound lane and shoulder closure, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline work at Route 1173 (Nutmeg Court). Intermittent lane closures and flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 727 (Spring Creek Road) – Commercial entrance work from Route 923 (Donnelly Drive) to Route 747 (Mossy Creek Road).  Shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 765 (Gravels Road) – Water line installation from Route 11 (North Valley Pike) to Route 720 (Shirttail Alley).  Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 799 (Piney Woods Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 211 (New Market Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road).  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Intermittent shoulder closure.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 800 (Long Meadow Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (Lone Pine Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road).  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Intermittent shoulder closure.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 801 (Holsinger Road) to end of state maintenance.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Intermittent shoulder closure.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 801 (Holsinger Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (American Legion Drive) to Route 619 (Wampler Road).  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Intermittent shoulder closure.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 820 (Bergton Road) – Motorists should be alert for travel delays of up to 20 minutes. Road construction and slope work.  Work zone is 1.1-mile to 0.3-mile west of Route 259. As needed, single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday during daylight hours.  Completion is November 2010.

* Route 867 (North River Road) – Entrance construction from Route 11 (Main Street) to Route 693 (Fairview Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 890 (Buckley Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) to end of state maintenance.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Intermittent shoulder closure.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 981 (Rockingham. Pike) – Turn lane installation from Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 829 (Independent Road). Right shoulder closure, intermittent detour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work zone is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 273.5 to 263.9 northbound and southbound – Vegetation cutting and trimming, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 296 to 291 southbound – Vegetation cutting and trimming, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Mile marker 285 to 295, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs at various locations.  Single lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning.  Night work.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (Congress Street) southbound lane – Sewer line work form Stuart Avenue to Confederate Avenue in New Market.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control, beginning April 15.  Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.  Completion is early May 2010.

* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Maurertown) – Safety and drainage improvement work from just south of Diamond Valley entrance to just north of Route 654 (Zion Church Road). Drain, grade, asphalt and utilities. Daylight operations with varying lane closures. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Estimated completion is June 2010.

* Route 11 – Paving from Route 1311 in Mount Jackson area to Route 1403 in Edinburg area.  Single lane closures with flagger traffic control.  Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Work should finish at the end of April.

* (NEW) Route 11 – Shoulder repair in Toms Brook area.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 725 (Morning Star Road) – Road closed from 0.11 mile from Route 263 in Macanie area.  Road closed from April 27 at 7 a.m. to May 7 at 3:30 p.m.  Bridge deck work.

* Route 744 (Deer Rapids) – Bridge over Shenandoah River. Bridge work from 0.30-mile east of Route 648 to 0.45-mile east of Route 648. Traffic controlled by flaggers as needed during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion is April 14, 2011.

* (NEW) Various roads – Patching, scraping and soft spot repair.

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 302 to 313 northbound – Vegetation cutting and trimming, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 317 to 313 southbound – Vegetation cutting and trimming, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 318 northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs at Route 11 overpass.  Single lane closures possible beneath bridge, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 11 – Sweeping in Winchester area.

* (NEW) Route 37 – Asphalt repair and bridge sweeping in Winchester area.

* Route 55 – Paving from West Virginia state line to Shenandoah County line.  Periodic lane closures eastbound and westbound from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday.  Flagger traffic control.
