TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF JULY 26-30, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64  

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 0 to 41 – Bridge inspections at various locations.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 18.5 to 21.5, westbound and eastbound – Left lane closures until July 30.  Median barrier construction installation project.

* Mile marker 19 – 19.5, eastbound and westbound – Long-term left lane closures with concrete barrier. Median barrier construction installation project. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) oversized load note: Wide loads up to 15 Feet in width will be able to proceed through the Work Zone both East and West Bound on I-64. Extreme Caution should be exercised by Motor Carriers as portions of the right shoulders may have to be used. Pilot vehicles are recommended. Updates for DMV Oversized Loads will be posted weekly.

* Mile marker 20 to 23, westbound – Right shoulder closure, June 14 to July 30. Median barrier project work.

 

Primary Roads                                       

* (NEW) Route 18 – Blue Springs Run bridge, .2 mile north of Route 788, bridge maintenance.  Work is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday.  Single lane traffic.

* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations June 14 to July 30 for I-64 median barrier project work.

* Route 220 – Bridge maintenance at the bridge over CSX Railway and Jackson River from 0.90 mile north of Route 1706 to 0.35 mile south of Route 60. Possible single-lane traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Bridge repairs at bridge over Miller Branch from 1.50 miles west of Route 159 to 1.90 miles east of Route 602. Single-lane closures with 10-foot lane width restrictions controlled by stop and proceed. Motorists must stop to ensure way is clear before proceeding across the bridge. Intermittent delays up to 15-minutes. Estimated completion is Aug. 9.

* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Bridge repairs at Tygers Creek located 2.3 miles west of Route 159 to 1.2 miles east of Route 602. Single-lane closures with 10-foot lane width restrictions controlled by stop and proceed signs. Motorists must stop to ensure way is clear before proceeding across the bridge. Intermittent delays up to 15-minutes. Estimated completion is Aug. 6.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. Single-lane traffic with stop and proceed sign. Roadway is restricted to a 10-foot width. Single-lane traffic will be in place 24 hours-a-day until mid-October. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.

* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations June 14 to July 30 for I-64 median barrier project work.

* Route 1011 – Bridge replacement in Selma area between Route 1002 and Route 1003. Road will be closed Monday to Thursday. Detour signs in place.

* Various roads – Patching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 39 – Patching east of Route 220, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Flagger traffic control.

* (NEW) Route 39 – Little Back Creek bridge, .03 mile east of Route 601, bridge maintenance work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday. Single lane closure.

* (NEW) Route 39 – Jackson River bridge, located 1.3 mile west of Route 621.  Bridge maintenance work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Single lane traffic.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control or arrow board.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 616 – Ditching, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control or arrow board.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 41 to 56 eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Single lane traffic with arrow board.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 173 to 205 northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound and southbound – Blasting operations will take place approximately two days a week between the hours of noon and 2 p.m. Monday to Friday. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure. The July 29 blasting operations will take place around 1 p.m. in the vicinity of the Route 712 Bridge. Signs posted. Blasting operations are estimated to continue through November.

* (NEW) Mile marker 175 to 200, northbound and southbound – Bridge maintenance on various structures.  Single lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning.  Work hours are 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 39 – Tractor mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. New traffic pattern. Periodic single-lane traffic withflagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 am to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is September 2010.

* Route 252 – Tractor mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Route 501 – Bridge maintenance at the bridge over Belle Creek from 2.45 miles north of Route 663 to 1.00 mile south of Route 792. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control or arrow board.

 

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 603 – Bridges over Irish Creek. Sign installation and bridge work from 1.40 miles east of Route 608 and 5.45 miles east of Route 608. Shoulder closed, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

* Route 611 (South Buffalo Road) – Bridge replacement. Road closed from 1.15 miles south of Route 738 (Rapps Mill Road) to 0.25 mile north of Route 661 (Spring Branch Road). Single-lane traffic restrictions controlled by stop and proceed. Motorists must stop to ensure way is clear before proceeding. Lane will be restricted 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Estimated completion is Sept. 24.

* Various roads – Trash pick-up, grading, patching, shoulder repair and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control or arrow board.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Route 220 – Tire and gravel replacement from Monterey to Bath County line. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Route 250 – Patching from Monterey to West Virginia State line. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 607 – Paving. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Route 634 – Paving. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control or arrow board.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning and litter pick-up.  Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Single lane traffic with arrow board.

 

Interstate 81

No lane closures reported.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 42 – Mossy Creek project. Roadway relocation and bridge replacement with box culvert. Work will occur from 0.63 mile south of Rockingham County line to 0.90 mile south of Rockingham County line. Expect minor delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Two lanes of roadway will be maintained.

* Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities. North Central Avenue is open to traffic. No left turn will be allowed from Churchville Avenue onto North Lewis Street. North Lewis Street is open to northbound traffic only. The eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The pedestrian detour is from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street. Signs are posted.

Expect intermittent delays from North Augusta Street to Albemarle Avenue due to utility installation work. Intermittent flagger traffic control for work in westbound lane. Speed limit in the project area reduced to 25 miles-per-hour. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:

  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262. Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
  • At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.

* Route 340 (Waynesboro) –Delphine Avenue project. Clean up work at construction site. Be alert for slow moving vehicles and clean-up activities. All lanes are open.

 * Various Roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 694 (Chestnut Ridge Road) – Rustic road construction from Route 695 (Arborhill Road) to Route 693 (Bethel Green Road). Road closed 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Thursday. Estimated completion is Aug. 9.

* (NEW) Route 746 – Road reconstruction from Route 745 to Route 616.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 775 to Route 773. Road closed 8 a.m., July 12 to 5 p.m., July 30.

* Route 907 – Bridge over Christians Creek is closed. No reopening date has been scheduled.

* Various Roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 237.51 to 263 northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 242.15 to 252.50, northbound and southbound – Median barrier project. Remove and replace existing median guardrail with high tension cable median barrier. Temporary lane closures northbound and southbound, Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Friday and Saturday, 10 pm. to 7 a.m.  Lane closures will end 7 a.m. on Sunday. Temporary shoulder closures northbound and southbound 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday  for removal of existing guardrail. 

* (NEW) Mile marker 243 to 263.9, northbound – Mowing near bridges, Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 42 (Forestville Road, Timberville) – Signal upgrade construction at intersection of Route 800 (Co-op Drive). Estimated completion is mid August.

* Route 42 (Warm Springs Pike) – Aerial and buried optic cable work from Bridgewater Town limits and Route 42 south to Augusta County line. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Aerial and buried optic cable work from Route 825 (South River Road) to Route 655 (Lawyer Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits. Asphalt operations to occur on Port Republic Road, Boyers Road and Ridgedale Road. Be alert for possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) – Waterline installation from 1.3 miles northeast of Route 890 (Buckley Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is July 30.

* Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Entrance, utility and medial installation work from Route 950 (Walton Way) to I-81 Interchange. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Route 726. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 800 (Long Meadow Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (Lone Pine Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

* Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 801 (Holsinger Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

* Route 801 (Holsinger Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (American Legion Drive) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

* Route 820 (Bergton Road) – Motorists should be alert for travel delays of up to 20 minutes for road construction and slope work. Work zone is 1.10 miles to 0.30 mile west of Route 259. Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday during daylight hours as needed. Blasting operations will also occur Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Friday. Delays up to one hour should be expected during these times. Completion is November 2010.

* Route 890 (Buckley Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 302 to 307, northbound and southbound – Sign repair, guardrail work, delineator repairs and ditch cleaning, Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 at Route 37, Kernstown area – Traffic signal and turn lane installation. Single-lane traffic with twelve-foot width restriction beginning June 1. Estimated completion is late July.

* Route 50 eastbound and westbound – Trench widening and paving from Route 1338 to Route 1317. Right lane closed, 7 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday to Thursday. Estimated completion is July 30.

* Route 522 northbound – Paving from Winchester City limits to Route 746. Alternating lane closures, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday to Friday. Estimated completion is Aug. 6.

* Route 522 southbound – Paving from Route 608 to the Route 37 interchange. Alternating lane closures, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday to Friday. Estimated completion is Aug. 6.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 656 (Morgan’s Mill Road) – Bridge replacement from 0.25 mile north of Route 7 west. Road closed beginning July 12, 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late July. Suggested detour: Southbound traffic use Route 661 (Redbud Road) east to Route 660 (Woods Mill Road) south to Route 7 (Berryville Pike) west. Northbound traffic use Route 1612 (Morlyn Drive) east to Route 1614 (Merlot Drive) north to Route 1610 (Mackenzie Lane) east to Route 660 north to Route 661 west.

* (NEW) Route 671 – Back Creek bridge, located .03 mile west of Route 741.  Bridge repairs.  Single lane traffic with stop and proceed signs.

* Various Roads – Calcium chloride application on non hard surface roads, weekdays. Estimated completion is early August.

* (NEW) Various roads – Patching and pipe cleaning.

 

CLARKE COUNTY

* Mile marker 298 to 300 northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 55 eastbound and westbound (South Fork Bridge project) – Soil work. Shoulder closures in the vicinity of Route 340/522, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion of soil work is early August.

* Route 340/522 northbound and southbound (South Fork Bridge project) – Soil work. Alternating lane closures between Seventeenth Street and Duck Street, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion of soil work is early August.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Temporary lane closures 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Happy Creek Road closed from Polk Avenue to Sixth Street until November 30 to reconstruct the Sixth Street intersection. Motorists should follow detour signs for alternate route. The speed limit in this work zone will be reduced to 25 mph.

* Various Roads – Calcium chloride application on non hard surface roads, weekdays. Estimated completion is early August.

* (NEW) Various roads – Shoulder and drainage work.

 

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

 

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones. Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511.
