TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 20-24, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and drainage repair. Shoulder closed, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 7 to 16, eastbound and westbound – Bridge deck maintenance on various structures. Single lane closure, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday.
* Mile marker 18.5 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Left lane closures. Median barrier construction installation project.
Long-term left lane closures with concrete barrier. Median barrier construction installation project. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) oversized load note: Wide loads up to 15 feet wide will be able to proceed through the eastbound work zone and up to 12 feet wide will be able to proceed through the westbound work zone on I-64. Extreme caution should be exercised by motor carriers as portions of the right shoulders may have to be used. Pilot vehicles are recommended.
* Mile marker 23 to 18.5, westbound – Right lane and shoulder closure. Westbound traffic will transition from the right lane to the left lane at mile marker 20.5. West Bound Traffic is restricted to one lane with no shoulder available. Motorists are advised to use extra caution while driving in the work zone. Median barrier construction installation project.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations Sept. 20 to 24 for I-64 median barrier project work.
* (NEW) Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) – Concrete culvert repairs 0.04 mile from Route 792 south and 0.11 mile to Route 792 north. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. Single-lane traffic with stop and proceed sign. Roadway is restricted to a 10-foot width. Single-lane traffic will be in place 24 hours-a-day until mid-October. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.
* Route 661 (Ogle Creek Road) – Brush cutting of exit 7 on I-64. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 672 – Rural rustic project off Route 621. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations Sept. 20 to 24 for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Route 1011 – Bridge replacement in Selma area between Route 1002 and Route 1003. Road will be closed Monday to Thursday. Detour signs in place.
* (NEW) Various locations – Mowing, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Various locations – Sweeping, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing and patching. Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 56 eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205 northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound and southbound – UPDATE: Blasting will take place on Sept. 21 and 23 at 1 p.m. Blasting will occur from mile marker 197 to 199.
Blasting operations will take place approximately two days a week between the hours of noon and 2 p.m. Monday to Friday. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure. Signs posted. Blasting operations are estimated to continue through November.

Primary Roads
* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. New traffic pattern. Periodic single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is October 2010.
* Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) – Concrete culvert repairs at 0.04 mile from Route 792 south to 0.11 mile Route 792 north. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 1.
* Various roads – Tractor mowing, brush cutting, guardrail mowing and debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 – Bridges over Irish Creek. Paving and guardrail work from 1.40 miles east of Route 608 and 5.45 miles east of Route 608. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 611 (South Buffalo Road) – Bridge replacement. Road closed from 1.15 miles south of Route 738 (Rapps Mill Road) to 0.25 mile north of Route 661 (Spring Branch Road). Single-lane traffic restrictions controlled by stop and proceed. Motorists must stop to ensure way is clear before proceeding. Lane will be restricted 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Estimated completion is Sept. 24.
* Route 733 (Jordan Road) – Pipe replacement from 0.39 Miles east of Route 631. Road closed Sept. 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes. Signs posted.
* Various roads – Paving, grading and shoulder repair. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 84 – Paving. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Route 250 – Mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 640 – Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Guardrail mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64

Primary Roads
* Route 42 – Mossy Creek project. Roadway relocation and bridge replacement with box culvert. Work will occur from 0.63 mile south of Rockingham County line to 0.90 mile south of Rockingham County line. Expect minor delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Two lanes of roadway will be maintained.
* (NEW) Lyndhurst Road (City of Waynesboro) – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, night work. Single lane traffic with traffic control or with arrow board.
* Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities. North Central Avenue is open to traffic. No left turn will be allowed from Churchville Avenue onto North Lewis Street. North Lewis Street is open to northbound traffic only. The eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The pedestrian detour is from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street. Signs are posted.
Expect intermittent delays from North Augusta Street to Albemarle Avenue due to utility installation work. Intermittent flagger traffic control for work in westbound lane. Speed limit in the project area reduced to 25 miles-per-hour. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:
• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262. Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
• At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
* (NEW) Route 256 – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, night work. Single lane traffic with traffic control or with arrow board.
* Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Grading, slope and turn lane work from 800-feet north of Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Right shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 620 – Bridge maintenance on bridge over Moffatts Creek from 0.02 mile east of Route 252 to 1.83 miles west of Route 726. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 635 – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, night work. Single lane traffic with traffic control or with arrow board.
* Route 659 (Payton Hill Road) – Rural rustic project from Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road) to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Road closed, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 15.
* Route 694 (Swartzel Shop Road) – Rustic road construction from Route 686 (Hill Top Drive) to Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway). Road closed 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
* Route 699 – Paving from Route 646 to 0.09 mile south of intersection of Route 646. Intersection relocation project to improve sight distance. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
* Route 746 – Road reconstruction with flaggers controlling traffic from Route 745 to Route 616.
* Route 835 (Varner Road) – Cross pipe installation and rustic road widening project from Route 728 (Stover Shop Road) to Route 736 (Union Church Road). Road closed, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept 13 to Oct. 29.
* Route 907 – Bridge over Christians Creek is closed. No reopening date has been scheduled.
* Various locations – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Single lane traffic with traffic control or with arrow board.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237 to 263, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, inspect and repair delineators, reflectors and signs. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from the Route 11 intersection to the Port Republic Road intersection. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 42 (Warm Springs Pike) – Aerial and buried optic cable work from Bridgewater Town limits and Route 42 south to Augusta County line. Right shoulder closure, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Aerial and buried optic cable work from Route 825 (South River Road) to Route 655 (Lawyer Road). Right shoulder closure, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits. Asphalt operations to occur on Port Republic Road, Boyers Road and Ridgedale Road. Be alert for possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading.

Secondary Roads
* Route 613 (Jordan Hill Road) – Road widening and drainage work from Route 729 (Campbell Road) to Augusta County line. Intermittent shoulder closures. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.
* (NEW) Route 649 (Island Ford Road) – Bridge joint repair at South Fork Shenandoah River. Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Route 726. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 800 (Long Meadow Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (Lone Pine Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 801 (Holsinger Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 801 (Holsinger Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (American Legion Drive) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 820 (Bergton Road) – Motorists should be alert for travel delays of up to 20 minutes for road construction and slope work. Work zone is 1.10 miles to 0.30 mile west of Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road). Construction in this section will be controlled by temporary traffic signals 24 hours-a-day, Aug. 16 to Oct. 16. The signals will be located at both ends of the construction area. Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Saturday 24 hours-a-day as needed. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the work zone and to only proceed when a green light is present. Blasting operations will also occur Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Delays up to one hour should be expected during these times. Estimated completion is Nov. 2010.
* Route 890 (Buckley Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 955 (Jackson’s Way) – Bridge superstructure replacement on the Madison Run Bridge from 1.40 mile west of Route 340. Road closed, Sept. 20 to late October. Suggested detour:  Motorists wishing to access Route 955 west of the bridge should use the Route 253 (Port Republic Road) intersection with Route 955. Motorists wishing to access Route 955 east of the bridge should use the Route 340 intersection with Route 955.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading.

Suggested detour: Northbound traffic take Route 627 west to Route 11 (Valley Pike) north to Route 735 (Salem Church Road) east to Rout 709 (Ridings Mill Road) south. Southbound traffic take Route 709 north to Route 735 west to Route 11 south to Route 627 east. Estimated completion is October 2010.
* (NEW) Route 671 – Bridge repairs on bridge over Back Creek from 1.45 miles east of Route 681 to 0.03 mile west of Route 741. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control.
* Route 803 – Surface treatment operations. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 24.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching and mowing.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 7 (Berryville Pike), westbound – Sewer line installation. The lane will be restricted from the intersection of Route 603 to the intersection of Route 612 beginning Sept. 1. Estimated completion is late September 2010. All lanes will be open on the weekends.
* Route 50, westbound – Bridge deck maintenance on bridge over Shenandoah River from 0.10 mile west of Route 638 to 0.25 mile east of Route 622. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 50, eastbound – Paving from 0.07 mile west of Route 665 to 0.31 mile west of Route 638, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Alternating lane closures. Estimated completion is Sept. 24.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing, scraping and concrete repairs.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and guardrail repair. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads

Secondary Roads
* Route 678 – Surface treatment operations. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 1.
* Route 802 (Zion Church Road) – Bridge widening and guardrail installation from Route 522 to Route 639. Road closed beginning Sept. 7. Estimated completion is mid October 2010.
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Temporary lane closures 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Happy Creek Road closed from Polk Avenue to Sixth Street until November 30 to reconstruct the Sixth Street intersection. Motorists should follow detour signs for alternate route. Lewis Street will be closed from Cannon Street to Happy Creek Road. Lewis Street traffic should use Meadow Lane. The speed limit in this work zone will be reduced to 25 mph. Beginning Aug. 31, traffic will be diverted to a single-lane, stone road with flagger traffic control and a pilot vehicle during work hours. Traffic will be restored to  
two-way traffic during non-work hours. Motorists are advised to drive with caution through the work zone and be aware of changes in traffic patterns.
* Various roads – Mowing and brush cutting.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones. Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511.
