TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF NOVEMBER 1-5, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18.5 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project.
Mile marker 18.5 to 24.5 eastbound – Left lane closure.
Mile marker 24.5 to 21, westbound – Left lane closure. Right shoulder closure is mile marker 23 to 20, westbound.
* Mile-marker 21 to 20, westbound – Right lane and shoulder closure. Be alert for traffic transitioning from the right lane to the left lane near mile marker 21 westbound, single lane traffic.
Wide loads up to 15 feet in width can proceed eastbound through the work zone. Wide loads up to 12 feet in width can proceed westbound through the work zone.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

Secondary Roads
* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. Single-lane traffic with stop and proceed sign. Roadway is restricted to a 10-foot width. Single-lane traffic will be in place 24 hours-a-day until mid-November. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.
* Route 661 (Ogles Creek Road) – Brush cutting, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 701 – Bank stabilization from 0.25 mile southwest of Route 220 in the Town of Iron Gate. Single-lane traffic, Oct. 27 to Nov. 12.
* Route 1011 – Bridge replacement in Selma area between Route 1002 and Route 1003. Road will be closed Monday to Thursday. Detour signs in place.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Various roads – Grading. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grading is a mobile work zone.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
No lane closures reported.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Pipe cleaning and ditch repair. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 56 eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205 northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* (UPDATE) Blasting will occur on Nov. 2, Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m. The blasting locations will be on I-81 between mile-markers 197 to 199. Signs are posted in this area. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure. Nighttime right northbound lane closures will take place Nov. 1 to 4. The closure will be from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each evening. The right lane will be closed between mile-marker 195.5 and mile-marker 196.5.

Primary Roads
* Route 60 – Paving, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mobile operations and a single-lane closure.
* Route 130 – Shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Watch for construction traffic in this work zone.
* Various roads – Litter pickup, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 717 (Goose Creek Road) – Patching. Work zone is 0.20 mile east of Route 724 to 0.88 mile east of Route 721. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 12.
* Various roads – Brush cutting, mowing, grading, pipe work, paving and patching. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 220 – Mowing from Route 606 to the Town of Monterey. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 631 – Shoulder repair at various locations, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Grading, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
No lane closures reported.

Interstate 81
No lane closures reported.

Primary Roads
* Route 42 – Mossy Creek project. Roadway relocation and bridge replacement with box culvert. Work will occur from 0.63 mile south of Rockingham County line to 0.90 mile south of Rockingham County line. Expect minor delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Two lanes of roadway will be maintained. Completion is July 20, 2011.
* Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Grading, slope and turn lane work from 800-feet north of Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Right shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 746 – Road reconstruction with flaggers controlling traffic from Route 745 to Route 616.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, guardrail installation and mowing. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from the Route 11 intersection to the Port Republic Road intersection. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail), eastbound – Extension of left turning lane at the intersection of Route 644 (Resort Drive). Left lane closed, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits. Motorists should be alert for a traffic pattern change on Oct. 7. Southbound traffic at the Harrisonburg city limits will be shifted to the right onto the newly constructed roadway. Just before the Southeast Connector intersection, traffic will be moved to the left and rejoin the existing roadway. Northbound traffic, just past the Southeast Connector, will shift to the left. Prior to entering the Harrisonburg city limits, traffic will be guided to the right and return to the existing roadway. All work is subject to change and weather permitting.

Secondary Roads
* Route 602 – Bridge work on bridge over South Fork of the Shenandoah River located at the Rockingham and Page County line. Possible single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 671 (Shady Grove Road) – Mill Creek Bridge will be closed for bridge work. The closure will begin on Oct. 11 and last until mid-November. This location is near Port Republic. A detour will be posted. Motorists wishing to access Route 671 west of the bridge should take Route 253 (Port Republic Road) to Route 672 (Latimer Road) to Route 671. East of the bridge motorists can use Route 253 to Route 670 (Doe Hill Road) to Route 671
* Route 722 (Armentrout Path) – Mountain Run Bridge will be closed for bridge work. This location is at the Route 868 (Airey Lane) intersection near the Brethren Woods Camp in the George Washington National Forest, north of Keezletown. The closure will begin on Oct. 18 and last until early December.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work on Route 33 (Rawley Pike) and Route 726. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 800 (Long Meadow Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (Lone Pine Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 801 (Holsinger Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 801 (Holsinger Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (American Legion Drive) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 820 (Bergton Road) – Motorists should be alert for travel delays of up to 20 minutes for road construction and slope work. Work zone is 1.10 miles to 0.30 mile west of Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road). Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control as needed, Monday to Saturday during daylight hours. Construction in this section will be controlled by temporary traffic signals 24 hours-a-day, Aug. 16 to Nov. 30. The signals will be located at both ends of the construction area. Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Saturday during daylight hours. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the work zone and to only proceed when a green light is present. Blasting operations will also occur Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Delays up to one hour should be expected during these times. Estimated completion is Nov. 2010.
* Route 890 (Buckley Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 955 (Jackson’s Way) – Bridge superstructure replacement on the Madison Run Bridge from 1.40 mile west of Route 340. Road closed. Suggested detour: Motorists wishing to access Route 955 west of the bridge should use the Route 253 (Port Republic Road) intersection with Route 955. Motorists wishing to access Route 955 east of the bridge should use the Route 340 intersection with Route 955.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 302, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign repairs, guardrail installation and mowing right shoulder and crossovers. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mowing left shoulder, Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 283, southbound – Slide repair. Shoulder closures at exit 283 off ramp, Monday to Friday.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Water line work. Southbound lane shifted to center lane during work hours, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work zone is located from Route 42 to Woodstock southern town limits. Completion is early December.
* (NEW) Route 55 – Bridge over Mulberry Run. Bridge work at intersection of Route 623. Single-lane closure with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 609 (South Hollingsworth Road) – Swinging bridge is closed until further notice. This location is 0.20 mile east of Route 670 (East Reservoir Road). Signs and barricades will be located, closing bridge to all pedestrian traffic.
* Route 744 (Deer Rapids) – Bridge over Shenandoah River. Bridge work from 0.30-mile east of Route 648 to 0.45-mile east of Route 648. Traffic controlled by flaggers as needed during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion is April 14, 2011.
* (NEW) Various roads – Patching, pipe cleaning and scraping.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, guardrail work and mowing right shoulder. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mowing left shoulder, Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 7 – Paving westbound from Clarke County line to Winchester City limits, Sunday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Paving eastbound from Winchester City limits to Route 656 west, Sunday to Friday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Alternating lane closures. Estimated completion is Nov. 5.
* Route 11 – Line painting from Route 1129 to Winchester City limits. Flagger traffic control, Sunday to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 4.
* Route 37, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs on various structures. Single-lane closures, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Route 277 (Fairfax Pike) – Line painting operations from Route 719 to Route 11. Flagger traffic control, Sunday to Friday, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Estimated completion is Nov.5.
* Route 522, southbound – Paving from West Virginia Sate line to 0.02 mile south of Route 692. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 5.
* Route 522, northbound – Paving from 0.45 mile north of Route 681 to 0.52 mile north of Route 699. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 5.
* Route 522 – Intersection improvement at Route 642 (Tasker Road) including additional turn lane and signal installations. Lane closures and lane shifts during construction. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2011.

Secondary Roads

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 7 – Sewer line work, from Route 603 to Route 621. Westbound outside lane closed during work hours, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Completion is mid-November.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Patching.
* Various roads – Railroad crossing work. Be alert for road closures in Clarke and Warren counties on various roads for railroad crossing work. Specific site information will be announced closer to construction date. Norfolk and Southern Railroad work.

 

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 522, northbound – Paving from Route 732 to Route 277. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is Dec. 1.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Temporary lane closures 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Happy Creek Road closed from Polk Avenue to Sixth Street until Nov. 30 to reconstruct the Sixth Street intersection. Motorists should follow detour signs for alternate route. Lewis Street traffic should use Meadow Lane. The speed limit in this work zone will be reduced to 25 mph. Motorists are advised to drive with caution through the work zone and be aware of changes in traffic patterns.

* Various roads – Railroad crossing work. Be alert for road closures in Clarke and Warren counties on various roads for railroad crossing work. Specific site information will be announced closer to construction date. Norfolk and Southern Railroad work.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
