TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF DECEMBER 20-31, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18.5 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Left lane closed. No work on Dec. 23, 24 and 31. The speed limit in the work zone is 45 mph. Wide loads up to 16-feet in width can proceed eastbound and westbound through the work zone.
* Mile marker 25.6, eastbound and westbound – Bridge work on bridges over Commercial Avenue and Smith Creek. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route F-1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work. No work on Dec. 23, 24 and 31.
* Various routes – Shoulder repairs, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. Estimated completion of guardrail installation is Dec. 23. Paving to begin when weather permits. The 10-foot roadway width restriction has been lifted. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with signs and flaggers as needed. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.
* Route 661 (Johnson Creek Road) – Brush cutting, weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. No work on Dec. 23, 24 and 31. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 1011 – Bridge replacement in Selma area between Route 1002 and Route 1003. Road will be closed Monday to Thursday. Detour signs in place.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Various routes – Ditching in Potts Creek area. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Various roads – Brush cutting, shoulder repairs and pipe installation. Flagger traffic control, weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No work on Dec. 23, 24 and 31.

BATH COUNTY

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Bridge work on bridge over Buffalo Creek from 0.20 mile north of Route 678 to 0.82 mile south of Route 843. Possible single-lane traffic, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Grading, brush-cutting, pipe cleaning, shoulder repair, and litter pickup. Weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31. Flagger traffic control.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Pipe cleaning, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31.

AUGUSTA COUNTY

Primary Roads
* Route 42 – Mossy Creek project. Roadway relocation and bridge replacement with box culvert. Work will occur from 0.63 mile south of Rockingham County line to 0.90 mile south of Rockingham County line. Two lanes of roadway will be maintained. Completion is July 20, 2011.
* (NEW) Route 256 – Roadwork at Route 11. Right shoulder closure, weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31.
* (NEW) Route 340 – Roadwork at Route 654. Right shoulder closure, weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31.
* Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Traffic signal reconstruction at Route 608 (Tinkling Spring Road/Draft Avenue). Intermittent lanes closures, Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimate completion is January 21, 2011.
* Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Traffic signal reconstruction at Route 649 (Augusta Farm Road/Locust Grove Lane). Intermittent lanes closures, Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimate completion is January 21, 2011.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 644 – Back Creek Bridge. Bridge work. Single lane traffic with 10 foot width restriction, 24 hours a day. Completion is April 15, 2011. Location is 3 miles south of Route 610.
* Route 746 – Road reconstruction with flaggers controlling traffic from Route 745 to Route 616.
* Route 906 – Rural rustic project from Route 612 (Indian Ridge Road) to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Expect delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers during work hours. Estimated completion is May 31, 2011.
* Route 971 (Lipscomb Road) – Bridge superstructure replacement on South River Bridge, 0.50 mile north of intersection of Route 624 and Route 970. Road closed. Detour signs posted. Estimated completion is January 14, 2011.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, drain cleaning and guardrail work. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from the Route 11 intersection to the Port Republic Road intersection. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits. All work is subject to change and weather permitting.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 631 – Little Dry River bridge, bridge work. Bridge closed. Traffic routed around existing structure. Completion is March 13. Signs control traffic. Location is .5 mile west of Route 818 (Little Dry River Road).
* Route 624 (Mill Lane) – Bridge superstructure replacement on Elk Run Bridge from 1.80 miles north of Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 623 (Mount Pleasant Road). Road closed beginning Nov. 10. Suggested detour: Motorists wishing to access Route 624 south of the bridge should use the Route 33 intersection with Route 624. Motorists wishing to access Route 624 north of the bridge should use the Route 33 intersection with Route 634 (Tanyard Bridge Road) and follow the posted detour signs to the intersection of Route 623 to Route 624. Estimated completion is January 10, 2011.
* Route 671 (Shady Grove Road) – Mill Creek Bridge will be closed for bridge work. This location is near Port Republic. A detour will be posted. Motorists wishing to access Route 671 west of the bridge should take Route 253 (Port Republic Road) to Route 672 (Latimer Road) to Route 671. East of the bridge motorists can use Route 253 to Route 670 (Doe Hill Road) to Route 671. Road anticipated to reopen on Dec. 23.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work at the intersection of Route 33 (Rawley Pike). Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31.
* Route 800 (Long Meadow Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (Lone Pine Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 801 (Holsinger Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 801 (Holsinger Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (American Legion Drive) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 820 (Bergton Road) – Slope and shoulder repair from 0.02 to 1.5 miles west of Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road). Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is January 2011. Road anticipated to reopen on Dec. 23.
* Route 890 (Buckley Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. No work Dec. 23, 24 and 31.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, drain cleaning and guardrail work. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 609 (South Hollingsworth Road) – Swinging bridge is closed and removed until further notice. This location is 0.20 mile east of Route 670 (East Reservoir Road). Signs and barricades will be located, closing bridge to all pedestrian traffic.
* Route 744 (Deer Rapids) – Bridge over Shenandoah River. Bridge work from 0.30-mile east of Route 648 to 0.45-mile east of Route 648. Traffic controlled by flaggers as needed during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion is April 14, 2011.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and guardrail work. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 522 – Intersection improvement at Route 642 (Tasker Road) including additional turn lane and signal installations. Lane closures and lane shifts during construction. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2011.

* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Temporary lane closures 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
