EAST NELSON STREET (ROUTE 60) VARNER LANE BRIDGE PUBLIC HEARING MOVED TO JANUARY 18

STAUNTON - The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a location and design public hearing concerning the East Nelson Street (Route 60) Varner Lane Bridge project in the City of Lexington.  The meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Rockbridge County Administration Building, 150 South Main Street , Lexington, VA  24450. The meeting was originally scheduled for Tuesday, January 11, 2011, but is being moved to January 18 due to inclement weather.

Citizens can come in during the meeting hours and discuss the project on a one-on-one basis with VDOT officials and designers. Written comments can be submitted at the meeting or within 10 days after the meeting date to Mr. Michael Branscome, Virginia Department of Transportation, 811 Commerce Road, Staunton, VA  24401-9029. Oral comments can be recorded at the meeting with the assistance of a court reporter.

This project will replace the existing bridge over Varner Lane located on East Nelson Street (Route 60) in the City of Lexington. The route is functionally classified as an Urban Minor Arterial road. The existing bridge, built in 1938, has two lanes with a sidewalk on the south side of the structure.  The existing bridge is 40-feet wide and 287-feet long.

The bridge is classified as structurally deficient. Structurally deficient means the condition of any part of the structure has reached a poor condition rating. This designation does not mean that a structure is in danger of imminent failure, but that its condition has deteriorated to a point where it should be replaced. The structure is currently posted with signs warning motorists that loads should not to exceed 19 and 26 tons.

The existing bridge will be replaced with a new, two-lane structure in approximately the same location as the existing structure. The new bridge is 46.3-feet wide and 213-feet long and will align with the approaches.  The new bridge has two 16.5-foot wide travel lanes, and 5.5-foot wide sidewalks on both sides with curb and gutter.

The average daily traffic count is 6,846 vehicles per day. The number is projected to increase to 10,100 vehicles per day in 2034.

This bridge is located in the vicinity of the Lexington Historical District.

There are no are no industries, schools, or commercial interest that will be taken by this project. One business will have access under the bridge closed during construction.

The bridge will be closed during construction and traffic will be temporarily detoured to Washington Street for approximately 18 months. Varner Lane through traffic under the bridge will also be closed during construction.

Additional right of way anticipated needs for the project are only for temporary construction easements.

The total estimated cost of this project is $4,097,625 which includes $455,358 for preliminary engineering, $368,172 for right of way and $3,274,095 for construction.

Approval of design plans is anticipated for winter 2011.  Right of way activities are scheduled to begin in spring 2011 with construction beginning in spring 2012.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
