TRACTOR TRAILER FIRE CLOSES BOTH I-81 SOUTHBOUND LANES SOUTH OF LEXINGTON

STAUNTON – Both southbound lanes are closed on Interstate 81 at mile marker 177 due to a tractor trailer fire.  Backups in the area are exceeding nine miles.  This location is in Rockbridge County, south of Lexington, between exit 180 in the Natural Bridge and Fancy Hill area and exit 175 at Natural Bridge.  Both exits connect to Route 11.

According to officials at the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District Traffic Operations Center, the tractor trailer was carrying a significant amount of paper.  Crews hope to have a single lane open around 6 p.m.  Crews are setting up a detour at exit 180.

Motorists should expect significant delays in this area and use alternate routes if possible.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
