TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MAY 2-6, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 0 to 16, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder repairs. Right lane closed, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound left lane closed. Wide loads up to 16-feet in width can proceed through the eastbound work zone. Westbound left lane closed. Westbound traffic may experience temporary lane shift at various locations for pipe installations. Wide loads up to 12-feet in width can proceed through the westbound work zone. A temporary concrete barrier has been placed in the median at mile marker 19. This is between exit 16 at Route 60/220 at the Mallow Mall area and exit 21 at Route 696 in Low Moor and Selma.

 

Primary Roads

* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Box culvert replacement at Tygers Creek. Work will affect southbound lane from 3.39 miles north of Route 159 to 0.06 miles south of Route 602 adjacent to the CSXT Railroad. One way traffic is being diverted to the northbound lane tunnel. Signs, channelizing devices and temporary traffic signals will direct traffic through the work zone. Work is weather permitting. Motorists should use extreme caution while traveling through the work zone.

* (NEW) Route 311 – Tree trimming from Route 159 to West Virginia state line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. The 10-foot roadway width restriction has been lifted. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with signs and flaggers as needed. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.

* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe installation and patching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Various roads – Pipe cleaning, shoulder and ditch repairs. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mobile operation.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 625 (River Road) – Road closed to thru traffic 24 hours-a-day at 0.50 mile south of the intersection of Route 624 (West Minister Road) due to a fill embankment section failure. No estimate for reopening the road is available. Signs will be posted. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.

* Route 676 (Gatewood Drive) – Bridge replacement off Route 39. Road closed 24 hours-a-day.

* Various roads – Patching, pipe and shoulder repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Blasting will occur on May 3, 4 and 5 at 12 p.m. The blasting locations will be on I-81 between mile-markers 195 to 200. Signs are posted in this area. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 – Vegetation management activities from Route 752 to Augusta County line. Mobile lane closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 39 – Tree trimming from Route 11 to Route 252. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 60 – Vegetation management activities from Route 702 to Route 608. Mobile lane closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 60 – Tree trimming from Buena Vista City limits to Amherst County line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 501 – Tree trimming from Route 130 to Amherst County line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 611 (South Buffalo Road) – Construction on bridge over Buffalo Creek at 0.20 miles south of Route 612 (Blue Grass Trail). Road will be restricted to one 10-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled with signs. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes. Estimated completion is May 31.

* (NEW) Route 712 – Bridge over I-81 closed for paving Monday, May 2 to Thursday, May 5. Signs posted.

* Various roads – Pothole repair, grading, brush cutting, spot patching, debris removal and shoulder repairs. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Route 84 – Tree trimming from West Virginia state line to 2.00 miles east of the West Virginia state line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* (NEW) Route 250 – Plant mix repairs, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Route 250 – Tree trimming from West Virginia state line to 7.20 miles east of the West Virginia state line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 612 (Ervin Road) – Due to weather related issues the road improvement work at the Bullpasture River fording, 0.40 mile east of Route 678, will be delayed. This project will be rescheduled for late summer 2011.

* Various roads – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 91 – Boring activities in the vicinity of the I-64 and Route 285 Bridge. Expect narrow pavement on ramps and lanes, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 91 eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures, May 5-6, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. The right lane will be closed 24 hours-a-day from April 29 at 9 p.m. to May 5 at 7 a.m. Drivers of tractor trailer trucks should use the left lane and drivers of passenger vehicles are requested to use the primary detour: Traffic will leave I-81 southbound at exit 217 onto Route 654 (White Hill Road) westbound to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Motorists will turn left onto Route 11 southbound and re-enter I-81 at exit 213. There will be three more planned block closures between May 6 and June 9. A single closure block is scheduled to begin on Fridays at 9 p.m. and ends the following Thursday at 7 a.m. During the block closures I-81 southbound will be reduced to one lane in the work zone. * Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 11 – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 250 – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 262 – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 262 – Paving from Route 932 (Baker Lane) to Route 254. Flagger traffic control with temporary lane closures. Work is 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, April 25 to Saturday, April 30. The following closures and detours will be posted:

  • Route 11 northbound traffic coming from Staunton headed to Interstate 81 will remain on Route 11 northbound toward Verona, turning right to eastbound Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road), to Interstate 81.
  • Route 11 southbound headed toward I-81will be detoured onto Route 262 westbound to I-81 at exit 220.
  • Route 262 eastbound headed toward I-81 from the intersection of Route 11 will be closed and traffic will be detoured onto Route 11 northbound toward Verona to eastbound Route 612 to Interstate 81.

* (NEW) Route 285/608 (Tinkling Springs Road) – Boring activities in the vicinity of the I-64 and Route 285 Bridge. Expect narrow lanes and intermittent closures. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 340 – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Boring activities in the vicinity of the I-64 and Route 285 Bridge. Expect narrow lanes and intermittent closures. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 746 – Road reconstruction with flaggers controlling traffic from Route 745 to Route 616.  Completion is April 30.

* (NEW) Route 795 – Maintenance on bridge over Christians Creek, from 0.43 miles south of Route 254 to 1.28 miles north of Route 807. Possible single-lane traffic, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* Route 800 (Folly Mills Station Road/Springfield Lane) – This closure is scheduled to begin on April 29 at 9 p.m. Road closed at Route 654 for the I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project. Only Route 11 intersections will be open for Route 800 traffic during the 24 hour-a-day I-81 lane closure period.

* Route 906 – Rural rustic project from Route 612 (Indian Ridge Road) to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Expect delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers during work hours. Estimated completion is May 31.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81 

* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, brush cutting and shoulder cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.

* Route 33, westbound – Turn lane improvement work at the intersection of Route 256. Turning lanes will be closed, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.22 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits. Possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is January 27, 2012.

* Route 257, westbound (Town of Dayton) – Waterline installation from Route 1225 (Stonecroft Drive) to Route 737 (Limestone Lane). Intermittent lane closures, weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 280 (Southeast Connector) – Boring activities from Stone Spring Road south to 0.60 miles east of Stone Spring Road. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* (NEW) Route 644 (Mount Olivet Church Road – Railroad upgrade and repairs from Route 640 (Model Road) to Route 643 (Waterloo Mill Lane). Road closed, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work at the intersection of Route 33 (Rawley Pike). Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 928 (Peach Grove Avenue – Boring activities north of Stone Spring Road extending north up to King Edward Way. Lane closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Various roads – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

PAGE COUNTY

Primary Road

* Route 211, eastbound – Work on bridge over Pass Run, 4.60 miles west of the Rappahannock County line. Road reduced to single 11-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day beginning April 6. Estimated completion is mid June.

* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 263.92 to 299, northbound and southbound – Shoulder widening and pavement marking work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late June.

* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, raking dirt piles at crossovers, brush cutting, sign work and shoulder cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 263.9 to 300, northbound and southbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Friday night to Saturday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 282.83 to 273.5, southbound – Line marking eradication and replacement. Mobile lane closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* Route 11 – Paving from north Edinburg Town limits to south Woodstock Town limits. Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is May 13.

* Route 11 – Paving in New Market, from Rockingham County line to Route 1020. Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is May 13.

* Route 11 – Pavement patching in Toms Brook and Strasburg areas. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is May 6.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 609 (South Hollingsworth Road) – Swinging bridge is closed and removed until further notice. This location is 0.20 mile east of Route 670 (East Reservoir Road). Signs and barricades will be located, closing bridge to all pedestrian traffic.

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* (NEW) Various roads – Scraping, cleaning pipes, ditching, brush cutting and dust control.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 299 to 324.21 northbound and southbound – Shoulder widening and pavement marking work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late June.

* Mile marker 300 to 320, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs on various structures. Single-lane traffic, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, raking dirt piles at crossovers and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Friday night to Saturday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

* Route 522 – Intersection improvement at Route 642 (Tasker Road) including additional turn lane and signal installations. Lane closures and lane shifts during construction. Tasker Road traffic detoured to Rainville Road and Maranto Manor Road to Route 522. Route 522 northbound will be reduced to single-lane traffic. Signs posted. Work is Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is late May.

* (NEW) Route 7 Business, Town of Berryville – Sidewalk repairs on East Main Street, Academy Street and Liberty Street. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is May 13.

* Route 7, eastbound – Paving from Frederick County lines to Route 632. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion is May 6.

* Route 50, eastbound – Paving from Frederick County line to 0.02 mile east of Route 340. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion is May 13.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Various roads – Paving work, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Flagger traffic control.  Estimated completion is May 20.

WARREN COUNTY

Interstate 66

* Mile marker 0.00 to 8.0, eastbound and westbound – Bridge deck maintenance on various structures. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 0 to 14.5, northbound and southbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday during daylight hours.

* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, raking dirt piles at crossovers and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 6, eastbound – Bridge painting over Crooked Run. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is mid July.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 at intersection of Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9

a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

* Route 522 – Slide repair at Route 604 (Harmony Hollow Road). Lane closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Shoulder closures 24 hours-a-day beginning March 14. Estimated completion is late May.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 603 (Howellsville Road) – Box culvert installation from 0.05 mile east of Route 643. Single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals. Estimated completion is late May.

* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). A portion of Happy Creek Road will be restricted to single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals to facilitate excavation work. The location of the signals will be just west of Mary Shady Lane to approximately 430-feet east of Meadow Lane. The signals will be located at both ends of the area and at the intersection of Mary Shady Lane and Happy Creek Road. The signals will control traffic 24-hours-a-day.

* (NEW) Various roads – Scraping and patching.

 

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

 

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
