TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF JULY 25-29, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 34 to 35, westbound – Pavement repair. Mobile shoulder closures, Monday and Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound left lane closed. Westbound left lane closed with traffic shifts to left lane from mile marker 24.5 to 21 for paving. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the eastbound and westbound work zones.

* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge work, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.
* (UPDATE) Blasting will occur on July 26 and 27 at 12 p.m. The blasting locations will be on I-81 between mile-markers 197 to 198. Signs are posted in this area. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 39 – Repair work on bridge over Maury River at Rockbridge Baths. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.
* Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

Secondary Roads
* Route 633 (Rockbridge Alum Springs Road) – Replacement of bridge over Brattons Creek. Road closed from 0.05 miles east of Route 780 (Brattons Run Road) to 1.25 miles north of Route 850 (West Midland Trail). Road closed, July 25 to Aug. 11. Detour posted.
* Route 670 (Beatty Hollow Road) – Pipe work from Route 670 (Borden Road) to Route 672 (Borden Road). Road closed, July 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Various roads – Grading, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, pipe cleaning, ditch work, pothole work and mowing. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 220 – Pipe repairs, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Estimated completion is October 2012.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 612 (McClung Road) – Road improvements at the Bullpasture River fording, 0.40 mile east of Route 678. Road closed 24 hours-a-day beginning Aug. 8 at 8 a.m. Signs posted. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes. Estimated completion is Aug. 12 at 5 p.m.
* Route 635 (Possum Trot Lane) – Cattle-guard replacement. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 641 (Ruckman Road) – Pothole repairs, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 87.7 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal, guardrail repair, fence repair and sign work. Monday to Friday.
* Mile marker 87.51 to 96.75, eastbound – Paving. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Friday night to Saturday morning, 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Speed limit reduced to 60 mph.
* Mile marker 87, eastbound – Paving. Ramp closed, Monday night to Tuesday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205 to 220, northbound and southbound – Maintenance work on various bridges. Single-lane closures, weeknights, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 212.2 to 211.9 – Repair bridges over Route 662. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 5.
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Under-drain installation will occur from mile marker 218 to 214, southbound. Right lane and shoulder closed, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of under-drain work is Sept. 1.
* Mile marker 219.3 to 219.6, northbound and southbound – Repair bridges over Folly Mills Creek. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is July 29.
* Mile marker 221, northbound – Paving. Ramp closed, Monday night to Tuesday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 227 to 228, northbound and southbound – Inspection of bridges over Norfolk Southern Railroad Spur. Single-lane closure, Wednesday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Replacement of bridge over Jennings Branch Tributary from 1.05 miles north of Route 250 and 1.23 miles south of Route 738. Possible single-lane closure with flagger traffic control, Aug. 1 to 4. Detour posted.
* Route 250 – Pipe cleaning. Intermittent right-lane closures.
* Route 256 – Shoulder work from Route 276 (Keezletown Road) to Route 847 (Valley Church Road). Shoulder closures July 5 to 25.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 340, southbound – Road improvement work at intersection of Route 9027. Right lane closed, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is mid August.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

* Route 652 (Gutherie Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 608 to Route 651. Road closed to thru traffic, 8 a.m., Aug. 1 to 5 p.m., Aug. 16. Detour posted.
* Route 687 – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.01 miles west of Route 42 and 4.60 miles east of Route 600. Possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 716 – Road reconstruction, widening and pipe installation from Route 629 to Route 250. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is early October.
* Route 971 (Libscomb Road) – Patching. Intermittent lane closures between Route 970 (Hall School Road) and Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road). Work is June 13 to July 27 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 1150 (Hampton Drive) – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.10 miles west of Route 633. Shoulder closure and possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign repair and cleaning shoulders. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 239, northbound and southbound – Painting bridges over North River. Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.
* (NEW) Mile marker 244.5 to 237, southbound – Paving. Single-lane closures, Aug. 1 to 5, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily. Estimated completion is late August.

Primary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* (NEW) Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 42, northbound and southbound – Paving operations from Route 746 to Route 713. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is August.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.22 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits. All lanes open to traffic but expect intermittent daytime single lane closures as construction work continues.

Secondary Roads
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures. Work estimated to begin on July 18.
* (NEW) Various roads – Surface treatment. Traffic controlled by lane closures, pilot truck and flaggers, weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, vegetation management, mowing, shoulder cleaning and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 269.1 northbound and southbound – Bridge work on bridge over North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Single lane closure, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday night to Friday morning. Left lane closed Monday and Tuesday night. Estimated completion is late July.
* (NEW) Mile marker 294 to 270, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 42 – Repairs on bridge over I-81 at Woodstock exit 283. Single-lane traffic, 2 p.m., July 16, to 7 a.m., July 18. Traffic controlled by police during peak travel times and by signals during off-peak travel times. Signs posted. Estimated completion is Aug. 1.
* (NEW) Route 55 – Mowing behind guardrail in Toms Brooks area.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 601 (Battlefield Road) – Work on bridge over Tumbling Run at 0.15 miles west of Route 757 in the Fishers Hill area. Road closed beginning Aug. 1. Detour posted. Estimated completion is early September.
* (NEW) Route 629 (Laurel Grove Road) – Bridge deck replacement from 3.20 miles east of Route 608 (Wardensville Grade) to 0.60 miles west of Route 622 (Cedar Creek Grade). Road closed beginning July 25. Suggested detour:  Westbound traffic use Route 622 north to Route 618 (Gough Road) west to Route 608 south to Route 629. Eastbound traffic use Route 608 north to Route 618 east to Route 622 south to Route 629. Estimated completion is early September.
* Route 673 – Sewer line installation from Route 11 to end of maintenance. Shoulder and lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is October.
* Route 678 – Bridge deck replacement located 0.03 miles north of Route 774. Intermittent lane closures and shoulder closures. Beginning June 27 there will be single lane closures 24-hours a day. Temporary signals will control traffic. Completion is mid-August.
* (NEW) Various roads – Sweeping bridges, mowing, brush cutting, scraping, pothole patching and shoulder work.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, shoulder repair, vegetation management and mowing. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 303.83 to 298.78, southbound – Modified latex overlay. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; and Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Estimated completion is late August.

Primary Roads
* Route 50 (Northwest Pike) westbound in Roundhill area – Turn lane installation. Work is from Route 803 (Round Hill Road) to Route 654 (Poorhouse Road), Width restriction of 12 feet from June 27 at 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is late July.

Secondary Roads
* Route 671 – Gas line replacement from Route 662 to Route 664. Shoulder and lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is September.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe cleaning and replacements, mowing behind guardrail, brush cutting, shoulder work and ditching.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 7 – Mowing behind guardrail in Berryville area.
* (NEW) Route 50 – Mowing behind guardrail in Berryville area.
* (NEW) Route 340 – Mowing behind guardrail in Berryville area.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 723 – Asphalt overlay, line painting and shoulder work from Route 340 to Frederick/Clarke County line. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is mid August.
* Route 723 (East Main Street), eastbound – Bridge deck replacement and footer repairs 1.30 miles east of Route 340. Road closed beginning 6 a.m. on July 11. Suggested detour:  Eastbound traffic use Route 340 (North Greenway Avenue) north to Route 255 (Bishop Meade Road) south to Route 723. Westbound traffic use Route 255 north to Route 340 (South Greenway Avenue) south to Route 723. Estimated completion is early August.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe cleaning.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* (NEW) Mile marker 0 to 1, eastbound and westbound – Inspection of bridges at I-66 ramps. Single-lane closure, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* (NEW) Route 340 – Brush cutting in Front Royal area.
* (NEW) Route 522 – Brush cutting in Front Royal area.
* Route 522 (Front Royal area) – Slope repair at Route 604 (Harmony Hollow Road). Lane closures, 7 a.m. to 5p.m., Monday to Thursday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday. Estimated completion is late July.

Secondary Roads

* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). A portion of Happy Creek Road will be restricted to single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals to facilitate excavation work. The location of the signals will be 430-feet west of Meadow Lane to approximately 280-feet east of Wakeland Court. The signals will control traffic 24-hours-a-day. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe cleaning, scraping and mowing.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
