TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 8-12, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound and westbound left lane closures with right shoulder closures at various locations. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the work zones.
* (NEW) Mile marker 53 to 55, eastbound and westbound – Inspection of bridge over Maury River. Single-lane closure, Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge work, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.
* (UPDATE) The southbound right lane will be closed from mile marker 198.8 to 198.6 on Aug. 9 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to remove a barrier. The northbound right lane will be closed from mile marker 201 to 203 on Aug. 10 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to remove and replace a barrier.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 39 – Repair work on bridge over Maury River at Rockbridge Baths. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.

Secondary Roads
* Route 633 (Rockbridge Alum Springs Road) – Replacement of bridge over Brattons Creek. Road closed from 0.05 miles east of Route 780 (Brattons Run Road) to 1.25 miles north of Route 850 (West Midland Trail). Road closed, July 25 to Aug. 11. Detour posted.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Patching, brush cutting, ditch work and mowing. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 220 – Mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 612 (McClung Road) – Road improvements at the Bullpasture River fording, 0.40 mile east of Route 678. Road closed 24 hours-a-day beginning Aug. 8 at 8 a.m. Signs posted. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes. Estimated completion is Aug. 19 at 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 615 (Davis Run Road) – Ditching and tree removal. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 640 (Bluegrass Valley Road) – Boom0axe repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 87.7 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal, guardrail repair and sign work. Monday to Friday.
* Mile marker 94 to 96.7, eastbound – Paving, marking and shoulder work. Single-lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Exit 96 closed, Monday night to Wednesday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Speed limit reduced to 60 mph. Estimated completion is Aug. 15.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205 to 220, northbound and southbound – Maintenance work on various bridges. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 212.2 to 211.9 – Repair bridges over Route 662. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Under-drain installation will occur from mile marker 218 to 214, southbound. Alternating lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of under-drain work is Sept. 1.
* (NEW) Mile marker 219.3 to 219.6, northbound and southbound – Repair of bridges over Folly Mills Creek. Lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday.
* (NEW) Mile marker 233 to 235, northbound and southbound – Inspection of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Single-lane closure, Aug. 29, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 256 – Shoulder work from Route 276 (Keezletown Road) to Route 847 (Valley Church Road). Shoulder closures thru Aug. 12.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Route 610 – Shoulder reconditioning from Route 664 to Route 633. Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control, daily, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 12.
* Route 652 (Gutherie Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 608 to Route 651. Road closed to thru traffic, 8 a.m., Aug. 12 to 5 p.m., Aug. 16. Detour posted.
* (NEW) Route 698 (Wise Hollow Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 690 (Summit Church Road to the Rockingham County line. Road closed, Aug. 29 to Sept. 8. Detour posted.
* Route 716 – Road reconstruction, widening and pipe installation from Route 629 to Route 250. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is early October.

* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, vegetation management and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 239, northbound and southbound – Painting bridges over North River. Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.
* (NEW) Mile marker 242 to 244, northbound and southbound – Inspection of bridge/on and off ramp over I-81. Single-lane and shoulder closures, Aug. 22, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 244.5 to 237, southbound – Paving. Single-lane closures, Aug. 8 to 12, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday night to Friday morning and 10 p.m. to 9 a.m., Friday night to Saturday morning. Estimated completion is late August.

Primary Roads
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.22 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits. All lanes open to traffic but expect intermittent daytime single lane closures as construction work continues.
* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* (NEW) Route 721 (Greenhill Road) – Pipe installation from Route 42 (Harpine Highway to Route 910 (Garst Mill Road). Road closed, Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Detour posted.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 826 (Criders Road) – Pipe installation from Route 865 (Dovesville Road) and 1.25 miles west of Route 865. Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control, beginning Aug. 8.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* (NEW) Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation in conjunction with Route 1421 entry. Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* (NEW) Route 1418 (Second Street) – Gas line installation in conjunction with Route 1421 entry. Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* (NEW) Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Gas line installation between Route 42 (Harpine Highway and Route 259 (Mayland Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures. Work estimated to begin on July 18.
* (NEW) Route 1424 (Lindsey Avenue) – Gas line installation in conjunction with Route 1421 entry. Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* (NEW) Route 1432 (Fifth Street) – Gas line installation in conjunction with Route 1421 entry. Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Various roads – Surface treatment. Traffic controlled by lane closures, pilot truck and flaggers, weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign work, ditch cleaning and shoulder repair. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 269.1 northbound and southbound – Bridge work on bridge over North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Single lane closure, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday night to Friday morning. Left lane closed Monday and Tuesday night. Estimated completion is mid August.
* (NEW) Mile marker 278 to 280, northbound and southbound– Inspection of bridge over Route 185 and Stony Creek. Single shoulder closure, Aug. 16 and 17, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 280 to 282, northbound and southbound – Inspection of bridge over Narrow Passage Creek. Single shoulder closure, Aug. 15, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
* Mile marker 288 to 268, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 11 – Mowing in Toms Brook area.
* Route 42 – Repairs on bridge over I-81 at Woodstock exit 283. Single-lane traffic, Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Traffic controlled by police during peak travel times and by signals during off-peak travel times. Signs posted.

Secondary Roads
* Route 601 (Battlefield Road) – Work on bridge over Tumbling Run at 0.15 miles west of Route 757 in the Fishers Hill area. Road closed beginning Aug. 1. Detour posted. Estimated completion is early September.
* Route 629 (Laurel Grove Road) – Bridge deck replacement from 3.20 miles east of Route 608 (Wardensville Grade) to 0.60 miles west of Route 622 (Cedar Creek Grade). Road closed beginning July 25. Suggested detour:  Westbound traffic use Route 622 north to Route 618 (Gough Road) west to Route 608 south to Route 629. Eastbound traffic use Route 608 north to Route 618 east to Route 622 south to Route 629. Estimated completion is early September.
* Route 673 – Sewer line installation from Route 11 to end of maintenance. Shoulder and lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is October.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, guardrail and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 303.83 to 298.78, southbound – Modified latex overlay. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; and Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Estimated completion is late August.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 340/522, northbound (North Fork Shenandoah River Bridge) – Steel plate repairs. Single-lane traffic, Aug. 9, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). A portion of Happy Creek Road will be restricted to single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals to facilitate excavation work. The location of the signals will be 430-feet west of Meadow Lane to approximately 280-feet east of Wakeland Court. The signals will control traffic 24-hours-a-day. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
