TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 15-19, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound and westbound left lane closures with right shoulder closures at various locations. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the work zones.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* (NEW) Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Traffic signal work from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 at West Ridgeway Street (Route 60/220) and Commercial Avenue. This work will take place Monday to Thursday each week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should be alert for shoulder closures on Commercial Avenue and on Route60/220, which will limit parking. Bridge construction will occur from Sept. 19 to Oct. 12. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.
* Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 311 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.

* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 39 – Repair work on bridge over Maury River at Rockbridge Baths. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 697 (Amole Hollow Road) – Bridge work from 0.05 mile south of Route 699 (Wesley Chapel Road) to the dead end. Road closed, Aug. 16 to Sept. 8. Single-lane traffic detour in place. Traffic controlled with a stop and proceed sign.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pothole repairs, grading and mowing. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 220 – Mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 612 (McClung Road) – Road improvements at the Bullpasture River fording, 0.40 mile east of Route 678. Road closed 24 hours-a-day beginning Aug. 8 at 8 a.m. Signs posted. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes. Estimated completion is Aug. 19 at 5 p.m.
* Route 615 (Davis Run Road) – Rural rustic project. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 640 (Bluegrass Valley Road) – Boom axe repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 87.7 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal, guardrail repair, marker, delineator and sign work. Monday to Friday.
* Mile marker 87.6 to 96.7, eastbound – Rumble strips, marking and shoulder work. Single-lane and mobile closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Speed limit reduced to 60 mph. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.

Interstate 81
* (NEW) Mile marker 205.58 to 209.85, southbound – Paving beginning Aug. 16. Lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of paving is Sept. 9. Estimated completion of miscellaneous activities is Oct. 16.
* (NEW) Mile marker 210.4 to 210.7 – Repair of bridges over Route 675. Lane closures, Monday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 3
* Mile marker 212.2 to 211.9 – Repair bridges over Route 662. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 19.
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single-lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Under-drain installation will occur from mile marker 218 to 214, southbound. * Route 698 (Wise Hollow Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 690 (Summit Church Road to the Rockingham County line. Road closed, Aug. 29 to Sept. 8. Detour posted.

Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.
* Mile marker 242 to 244, northbound and southbound – Inspection of bridge/on and off ramp over I-81. Single-lane and shoulder closures, Aug. 22, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 244.5 to 237, southbound – Paving. Single-lane closures, Aug. 15 to 19, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday night to Friday morning and 10 p.m. to 9 a.m., Friday night to Saturday morning. Estimated completion is late August.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.22 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits. All lanes open to traffic but expect intermittent daytime single lane closures as construction work continues.
* (NEW) Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road) – Paving from 0.20 miles east of Route 612 north (Brocks Gap) to intersection of Route 921 (Lairs Run Road) and Route 259. Single-lane traffic, Tuesday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot truck.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 727 (Airport Road) – Drilling from Route 11 to Route 696 for foundation investigation work. Road closed, Aug. 18 and 19, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flagger traffic control. Motorists encouraged to use alternate routes.
* Route 826 (Criders Road) – Pipe installation from Route 865 (Dovesville Road) and 1.25 miles west of Route 865. Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control, beginning Aug. 8.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* (NEW) Route 1413 (Holly Hill Street) – Sewer line installation from Route 259 (Mayland Road) to Route 1414 (Turner Avenue), Monday and Tuesday.
* Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation in conjunction with Route 1421 entry. Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* Route 1418 (Second Street) – Gas line installation in conjunction with Route 1421 entry. Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Gas line installation between Route 42 (Harpine Highway and Route 259 (Mayland Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Aug. 23.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures. Work estimated to begin on July 18.

* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Various roads – Surface treatment. Traffic controlled by lane closures, pilot truck and flaggers, weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

Secondary Roads

* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Motorists should expect daily lane closures. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* (NEW) Various roads – Sweeping.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
