TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 10-14, 2011

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, mowing and cleaning under guardrail. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. All travel lanes will reopen in the middle of the week with shoulder closures remaining.  Some work to the median barrier will continue but will feature temporary lane closures during that week, which is projected to take place prior to the end of October.

* Mile marker 25.6, eastbound and westbound – Maintenance on bridges over Commercial Avenue and Smith Creek. Possible single-lane closure, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

Primary Roads 

* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time.

Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 608 (Wolfe Road) – Rural rustic project, Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

* Route 631 – Bridge deck replacement at intersections of Route 600 and Route 683. Traffic reduced to one 10-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled with temporary signals. Estimated completion is late November.

* (NEW) Various roads – Patching. Mobile operation, Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Various roads – Brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 39 – Pipe replacement west of Mountain Grove. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads – Pipe replacement. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge work, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 173 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, mowing and tree trimming. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Mile marker 175 to 192, northbound and southbound – Maintenance on various bridge structures. Single-lane traffic, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – At I-81 and I-64 interchange. Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.

* Mile Marker 195, southbound – Bridge deck work on the I-81 Bridge over Route 11. Single-lane closed 24 hours-a-day beginning at 6 p.m., Oct. 8 and lasting until 7 a.m., Oct. 13. During the bridge deck work, tractor trailers will remain on I-81 and passenger vehicles will take a detour using the exit 195 off-ramp, cross Route 11 with the assistance of flagger traffic control and then immediately re-enter I-81 using the exit 195 on-ramp. Both southbound lanes will be closed on Oct. 8 beginning at 10 p.m., to permit work zone set-up and traffic control. One lane will be reopened around 3 a.m. Travelers will use the exit 19 off-ramp, cross Route 11 with the assistance of flagger traffic control and then immediately re-enter I-81 using the exit 195 on-ramp.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 196.5 to 197.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. Traffic barrier removal and paving. Right lane closed, Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Various roads – Grading, plant mix and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 602 (Walkers Creek Road) – Bridge work at 0.05 miles south of Route 724 (Jump Mountain Road) and 1.15 miles west of Route 731 (Dutch Hollow Road). Road closed, Sept. 21 to Oct. 13. Detours posted.

* Route 651 (Honey Hollow Road) – Rural rustic project with pipe installation, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing. Mobile operation, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Work will take place 24 hours-a-day. Estimated completion is October 2012.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 678 – Tar distributor work from Highland County line to Route 250. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Tar distributor work. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting and pipe cleaning, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

No lane closures scheduled.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris and tree removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Mile marker 205.58 to 209.85, southbound – Guardrail installation. Right shoulder closed, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion of miscellaneous activities is Oct. 16.

* Exit 227 – Bridge work on Route 612 bridge. I-81 single lane closures, Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 22.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

*Route 256 – Shoulder closures from Route 276 (Keezletown Road to Route 847 (Valley Church Road).

* Route 340 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 340 – Maintenance on bridges over I-64 at exit 94. Possible single lane traffic weeknights, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* (NEW) Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Utility work at Route 649 on Sunday, Oct. 9, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Single lane closures in each direction.  Flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 608 (New Hope area) – Paving, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control. Paving in this area will continue until early November.

* Route 612 – Maintenance on bridge over Lewis Creek from 0.05 mile east of Route 790 and 0.29 mile west of Route 789. Possible single lane traffic, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* Route 652 (University Farm Road) – Roadway upgrades from Route 340 to Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Oct. 14.

* (NEW) Route 720 (Morris Mill Road) – Paving operations from Route 262 to Route 612 on Wednesday, Oct. 12.  Single lane closures.

* Route 862 (Furnace Road) – Roadway upgrades and rural rustic work from Route 601 (Estaline Valley Road) and end of state maintenance. Intermittent lane closures.

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81 

* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, shoulder repair, guardrail work, delineator work and inspect and clean drainage assets. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 33, eastbound and westbound – Milling, paving, striping and shoulder work from Rawley Pike to the West Virginia state line. Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 257 – Milling, paving, striping and shoulder work from Branch Point Drive and Glen Cove Lane to Community Center Road and from Spring Creek Road to Dry Hollow Road. Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

* Route 340, northbound – Striping and shoulder work from Route 649 (Berry Ford Road/Island Ford Road) to Route 1703 east and west (East Summit Avenue). Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.

* Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.

* Route 1418 (Second Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.

* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures.

* Route 1424 (Lindsey Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closure and possible shoulder closure.

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

PAGE COUNTY

Primary Road

* Route 211 – Maintenance on bridge deck over South Fork Shenandoah River from 0.06 mile west of Route 646 and 0.70 mile east of Route 615.Single lane closures, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011. 

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, guardrail and delineator work and clean drainage assets. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 282 to 273, southbound – Line marking operations, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 1.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 11 – Paving from Route 211 westbound to Route 1020 in the Town of New Market. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 28.

* Route 11 – Paving from Route 211 westbound to Route 730. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 28.

* Route 673 – Sewer line installation from Route 11 to end of maintenance. Shoulder and lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is October.

* (NEW) Route 720 – Maintenance work at the Meems Bottom Bridge near the Town of Mount Jackson. Road closed, Oct. 31 to Nov. 11, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris and litter removal, mowing, Beaver Dam management, clean drainage assets, cutting and trimming on bridge slopes. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 304 to 298, southbound – Line marking operations, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 1.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 11 – Paving from Winchester City limits north to Route 1323. Flagger traffic control, Monday night to Sunday morning, 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 28.

* Route 522, northbound and southbound – Asphalt overlay from Route 644 to the Route 17/50/522 interchange. Alternating lane closures with flagger traffic control, Sunday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 14.

* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single lane traffic beginning at 12 noon, Tuesday and ending at 6 p.m., Friday. Signs posted.

* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

 

Secondary Roads

No lane closures reported.

 

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
