SOUTHBOUND LANES ON I-81 REMAIN CLOSED AT MILE MARKER 279
STAUNTON – (10:00 a.m.) An early morning accident on Interstate 81 at mile marker 279 has left all southbound lanes closed. This location is at exit 279 at Route 185 in Edinburg area of Shenandoah County.
A tractor trailer carrying cardboard caught fire and is in the median next to the I-81 southbound bridge that travels over Route 185. Crews are unloading the truck. Virginia Department of Transportation bridge inspectors are on the scene evaluating the southbound bridge for any possible damage.
Southbound motorists are exiting I-81 at exit 279, crossing Route 185 and then using the exit 279 on-ramp to re-enter I-81.
There is no reopening time set yet for reopening the lanes. Traffic is backups are ranging three to four miles as of 10 a.m.
