TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MARCH 26-30, 2012
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, turf repair and clean ditches, storm drains and drop inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 24.2, eastbound and westbound – Repair bridges over Jackson River. Right shoulder closed, Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Apr. 27.
* (NEW) Mile marker 25.6, eastbound and westbound – Maintenance work on bridges over Commercial Avenue and Smith Creek. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Mile marker 28, eastbound and westbound – Repair bridges over Wilson Creek from 0.10 mile east of I-64 exit 27. Right shoulder closed, Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Apr. 27.

Primary Roads
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time. Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.
* Various roads – Patching potholes. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River Bridge and approaches from 1.46 miles south of Route 634 to 1.14 miles south of Route 634. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Sunday. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.
* Various roads – Patching potholes, pipe installation, grading and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Various roads – Pothole patching, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Pipe cleaning, pothole patching, pipe replacement and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, turf repair and clean ditches, storm drains and drop inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and clean ditches, storm drains and drop inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. There are no lane closures on I-81 for the truck climbing lane project this week.

Primary Roads
* Route 11, northbound – Maintenance on bridge over Mill Creek from 0.34 mile south of Route 763 to 0.35 mile north of Route 39. Possible single-lane traffic, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Litter pickup, pipe cleaning and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Litter pickup, ditching, pipe replacement and cleaning, brush cutting, grading and pothole repairs. Flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Work may take place 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 25 mph. Estimated completion is October 2012.
* Various roads – Sweeping intersections, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Sweeping intersections, brush cutting and pothole repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
No lane closures reported.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, turf repair and clean ditches, storm drains and drop inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 42 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 256 – Maintenance work on bridge over Middle River from 0.25 mile east of Route 772 to 0.40 mile west of Route865. Possible single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
*Route 256 – Shoulder closures from Route 276 (Keezletown Road) to Route 847 (Valley Church Road).
* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Guardrail installation, single-lane and shoulder closures from Route 254 to Hopeman Parkway. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* Route 340 – Delphine Avenue Project. All traffic will be shifted to the east side of Delphine Avenue beginning Monday, March 26. Storm drain and temporary sidewalk installation, Monday to Friday. Intermittent flagging operations.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Retaining wall construction, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is May 1.
* (NEW) Route 646 (Fadley Road) – Bridge widening from 0.63 mile of Route 749 (Choushron Lane) to 0.08 mile of Route 11. Shoulder closed, Apr. 2 to 19.
* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, delineator repairs and brush cutting. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 33 – Utility work from Route 276 (Cross Keys Road) to Route 704 (Boyers Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is June 30.
* Route 340 – Shoulder closure from Route 649 (Island Ford Road) to Route 642 (Captain Yancey Road) for railroad crossing repairs. Estimated completion is March 31. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* (NEW) Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Shoulder work from Route 809 (Iron Works Road) to Route 607 (Mount Solon Road). Right shoulder closed, Monday to Friday.
* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.
* Route 753 (Kratzer Road) – Pole installation, intermittent lane closures from Route 908 (Pulses Hill Road) to Route 865 (Gravels Road).
* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.4 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road). Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 653 (Sedwick Road) – Reconstruction and surface treatment from Route 675 to Route 654. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours. Estimated completion is July.
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign work, delineator repairs, fence repairs and brush cutting. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Various locations – Paving operations. Lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

Secondary Roads
* Route 720 (Crooked Run Road) – Bridge replacement at 0.93 mile south of Route 717 (Alum Springs Road) in the Basye area. Road closed beginning at 8 a.m., March 19. Detour posted. Estimated completion is April.
* Various locations – Scraping, brush cutting and pipe replacements.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 313 to 315, northbound and southbound – In conjunction with the Route 657/Senseny Road Bridge deck replacement work. Shoulder closures and intermittent nighttime lane closures beginning Feb. 20 for installation of barrier for shoulder closures. Estimated completion is mid-August 2012.
* (NEW) Mile marker 315, northbound and southbound – Painting of the Route 7 overpass. Bridge height will be 15-feet. Alternating lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., March 26 to Apr. 30
* Various locations – Paving operations. Lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads

Secondary Roads
* Route 657 (Senseny Road, Winchester) – Deck replacement work on bridge over I-81 from Millwood Pike (Route 522/50/17) and Berryville Pike (Route 7). Single-lane traffic with 10.5-foot width restriction, controlled by temporary signals. Work begins the week of Feb. 27. Estimated completion is mid-August 2012.
* Various locations – Pipe cleaning, patching and ditching.

CLARKE COUNTY

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 1 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 55, westbound – Brush cutting in Front Royal area.
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic switch to the new Rockland Road will take place Feb. 7 at 9 a.m. Traffic traveling northbound on 340/522 will be able to turn right at the light onto the newly constructed Rockland Road. Traffic traveling southbound on 340/522 will be able to turn left at the light onto the newly constructed Rockland Road. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Various locations – Grading, shoulder repairs and brush cutting.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
