TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF APRIL 23-27, 2012
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, post replacement, shoulder repair, and clean ditches, storm drains and drop inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 24.2, eastbound and westbound – Repair bridges over Jackson River. Right shoulder closed, Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Apr. 27.

Primary Roads
* Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) – Repair work. Periodic lane closure with flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Estimated completion is May 24.
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time. Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.
* Various roads – Ditching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River Bridge and approaches from 1.46 miles south of Route 634 to 1.14 miles south of Route 634. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Sunday. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.
* Various roads – Patching potholes, ditching and pipe repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 39 – Embankment work from West Virginia state line to one-mile east of West Virginia state line. Single-lane traffic, Apr. 17 to 27, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Grading shoulders and pipe replacement. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Pipe replacement, sweeping, grading, pothole patching and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, post replacement, clean ditches and storm drains. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, post replacement, shoulder repair, fence repair, clean ditches and storm drains. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. Right lane closed to move barrier from mile marker 200 to 201, Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Right lane closed for striping from mile marker 195 to 200.6, Wednesday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Various roads – Litter pickup, pipe cleaning and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 612 (Blue Grass Trail Road) – Bridge work from Route 677 (Kygers Hill Road) to Route 251 (Collierstown Road) in the Horseshoe Bend area. Road closed, Apr. 23 to May 10. Two bridges that cross a tributary to Buffalo Creek will be replaced on Route 612. The first bridge is located from 0.80-mile north of Route 251 to 0.15-mile southeast of Route 677. The second bridge is located from 0.50-mile north of Route 251 to 0.40-mile southeast of Route 677.
* (NEW) Route 716 – Structural steel erection. Road closed May 1 to 4, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Various roads – Litter pickup, ditching, pipe replacement and cleaning, brush cutting, grading and pothole repairs. Flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Work may take place 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 25 mph. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 615 (David Run Road) – Rural rustic project. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 617 (Seldom Seen Road) – Ditching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 619 (Botkin Hollow Road) – Rural rustic project. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
No lane closures reported.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, post replacement, shoulder repair, turf repair, clean ditches and storm drains. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 42 (Parkersburg Turnpike) – Slope and shoulder repair, 2.37 miles south of Route 688 (Old Parkersburg Turnpike). Single-lane traffic, Apr. 23 to May 4. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 42 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Signal work at intersection of Old White Bridge Road. Lane closures as necessary from Goose Creek Road to Old White Bridge Road, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 256, northbound and southbound – Paving, line painting and shoulder stone placement from Weyers Cave town limits to the Augusta/Rockingham County line. Periodic lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 276 – Paving from Weyers Cave town limits to Rockingham County line. Single-lane traffic, Apr. 23, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 340 – Delphine Avenue Project. All traffic has been shifted to the east side of Delphine Avenue. Waterline installation from Route 340 to Route 250. Pavement demolition, curb and gutter removal on west side of Delphine Avenue. Sewer work to close 4th Street with a detour posted. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Retaining wall construction to include pavement demolition, grading, storm sewer installation and stone base installation. Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is May 1.
* Route 646 (Fadley Road) – Bridge widening from 0.63 mile of Route 749 (Choushron Lane) to 0.08 mile of Route 11. Shoulder closed, Apr. 23 to 26.
* (NEW) Route 688 (Old Parkersburg Turnpike) – Slope repair from Route 42 to Route 629 (Deerfield Road). Road blocked for long periods. Flagger traffic control, Apr. 23 to 27, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, fence repair, ditch cleaning and cable guardrail inspection. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 33 – Road bore, pipe installation and slope work from 0.185 mile west of Route 734 (Lumber Mill Road). Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 33 – Utility work from Route 276 (Cross Keys Road) to Route 704 (Boyers Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is June 30.
* Route 340 – Shoulder closure from Route 649 (Island Ford Road) to Route 642 (Captain Yancey Road) for railroad crossing repairs. Estimated completion is April 30. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.
* Route 734 (Lumber Mill Road) – Road bore, new pipe installation and riprap for slope protection 0.185 mile west of Route 734 in the Dale Enterprise area. Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is May 4.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 211, eastbound – Paving from west Luray corporate limit to Route 211 east business intersection. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is late May.
* Route 340 Business – Paving from north Stanley corporate limit to south Luray corporate limit. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is late May.
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.4 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road). Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 653 (Sedwick Road) – Reconstruction and surface treatment from Route 675 to Route 654. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours. Estimated completion is July.
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, guardrail work and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Various locations – Paving operations. Lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 11 – Paving from south of Toms Brook town limits to north of Woodstock town limits. Traffic controlled by pilot vehicle and flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* Various roads – Ditching and shoulder repairs.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 758 – Roadway borings. Single-lane traffic with flaggers, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various locations – Scraping, pipe replacements, shoulder repair and patching.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, delineator work and pothole repairs. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 313 to 315, northbound and southbound – In conjunction with the Route 657/Senseny Road Bridge deck replacement work. Shoulder closures and intermittent nighttime lane closures beginning Feb. 20 for installation of barrier for shoulder closures. Estimated completion is mid-August 2012.
* Mile marker 315, northbound and southbound – Painting of the Route 7 overpass. Bridge height will be 15-feet. Alternating lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., March 26 to Apr. 30
* Various locations – Paving operations. Lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Shoulder work.

Secondary Roads
* Route 657 (Senseny Road, Winchester) – Deck replacement work on bridge over I-81 from Millwood Pike (Route 522/50/17) and Berryville Pike (Route 7). Single-lane traffic with 10.5-foot width restriction, controlled by temporary signals. Work begins the week of Feb. 27. Estimated completion is mid-August 2012.
* Various roads – Ditching and pipe cleaning.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 7 Business (Main Street), eastbound and westbound – Railroad crossing replacement from Route 615 to Route 700. Route 7 Business and Route 615 closed from 7 a.m. Apr. 22 to 8 p.m., Apr. 24. Detours posted.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Ditching.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 1 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic switch to the new Rockland Road will take place Feb. 7 at 9 a.m. Traffic traveling northbound on 340/522 will be able to turn right at the light onto the newly constructed Rockland Road. Traffic traveling southbound on 340/522 will be able to turn left at the light onto the newly constructed Rockland Road. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Brush cutting and scraping.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
