TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF DECEMBER 24-28, 2012
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

Lane closures will be lifted from noon Monday, Dec. 24 until noon Wednesday, Dec. 26.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and clean ditches. Monday, Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (UPDATE) Brush cutting at various primary locations, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 617 – Road closed for widening and safety improvements. Estimated completion is May 2013.   
* Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River Bridge and approaches from 1.46 miles south of Route 634 to 1.14 miles south of Route 634. Be alert for flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.
* Route 638 (Natural Well Road) – Bridge over Jackson River closed until further notice for repairs. This location is 0.1-mile west from Route 687 (Jackson River Road) to 0.6-mile east from Route 666 (Morris Hill Road). Motorists can use the following routes for a detour:  Route 687 to Route 641 (Indian Draft Road) to Route 666.
* (UPDATE) Various roads – Shoulder repairs, pipe replacement, brush cutting and ditch/drainage repairs. Flagger traffic control, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads

Secondary Roads
* (UPDATE) Various roads – Brush cutting, patching, and grading. Flagger traffic control, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday, Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 173 to 205.5, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, ditch and shoulder cleaning, removal of hazardous trees. Monday, Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 195 to 199. Left (northbound) lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. – Truck climbing lane project. Width of the available lane will be 14 feet.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 at Two Suns Road – fiber optic cable work continues north toward I-81.
* (UPDATE) Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Wednesday to Friday.

Secondary Roads
* Route 608, south end of Forge Road – fiber optic cable work continues into Natural Bridge and Glasgow.
* (UPDATE) Route 763 (Lincoln Road) at Route 11. Utility project. Install water transmission line on northwest shoulder of Route 763 for 0.60 mile to the intersection of Route 11. Installation will continue on the east should of Route 11 northbound for 1.23 miles. Crossovers may be closed as the work progresses. Estimated completion is the end of January 2013.  
* (UPDATE) Various roads – Grading, pothole repairs, pipe replacement, ditching, and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* (UPDATE) Various roads – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Wednesday to Friday.
 

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (UPDATE)  Route 250 – Brush cutting at various locations on Bullpasture Mountain. Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (UPDATE)  Route 600 (Upper Backcreek Road) – Ditch cleaning at various locations. Flagger control, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 pm.
* (UPDATE) Various roads – Tree trimming, grading, and pothole repair. Flagger traffic control, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 89.5 to 93.0, eastbound – Guardrail placement. Right shoulder closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* Mile marker 97.1 to 106.4, eastbound and westbound – Afton Mountain Guardrail Project. Guardrail replacement and installation. Left lane closures and right shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Interstate 81
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, ditch and shoulder cleaning, repair of mile marker signs. Monday, Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Highway, Greenville), northbound and southbound – Sewer construction. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estimated completion is November 30, 2013.
* (UPDATE) Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Wednesday to Friday.
* Routes 340 at Route 654 in Stuart Draft – Traffic Signal Replacement. Estimated completion March 2013.
* Route 340 – Waynesboro, Delphine Avenue Project. Sanitary line work and barrier wall placement from Delphine Avenue to 4th Street. Be alert for lane closures and flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (UPDATE) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Wednesday to Friday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 251 to 264, northbound and southbound – Clean bridge slopes and under bridge ditches. Wednesday, December 26, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 251 to 273, northbound and southbound – Straighten On/Off ramp signs. December 27, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11, northbound – Bridge work on the bridge over Cooks Creek just north of the intersection with Route 257 near Bridgewater. Lane closures with a traffic barrier will be in place 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Traffic reduced to a single 12-foot lane with a 14-foot clear width between the barrier. Estimated completion in late December, weather permitting.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Turn lane and commercial entrance permit work from Harrisonburg City limits to Route 726 (Stone Spring Road). Work zone will have shoulder closures and intermittent right lane closures.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road, Page County) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On May 22, the traffic pattern will shift from the existing bridge on Route 603 to a temporary bridge during construction of the permanent structure. Estimated completion is April 2013.
*Route 646 (Bloomer Springs Road) between Big Buck Lane and Butterfly Lane, closed to through traffic. Follow road detour signs.
* Route 704 (Cooks Creek) – Bridge repair in Bridgewater between Route 11 and Route 42. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road, Town of Broadway) – Replacement of bridge over Linville Creek and signalization upgrade at Route 42. Possible single lane closures Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Work zone is from 0.275 miles west of Route 42 (South Main Street) to Route 42. Estimated completion is April 30, 2013.
* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Wednesday to Friday.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.40 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Motorists should use extreme caution and obey posted speed limit. Estimated completion is fall 2013. The bridges are still under construction but the portion of Route 340 from 3.27 miles to 2.95 miles south of the Page and Warren County line will open with new travel lanes after noon on Monday, Nov. 26. Motorists should use extra caution in this area as drives become familiar with this new traffic pattern.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road). Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* (NEW) Mile marker 273 to 251, southbound – Straighten On/Off ramp signs. Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 291 to 299, northbound and southbound – Debris removal from ramps, clean drains and culverts. Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Routes 11/55/1203 in Strasburg. Traffic signal replacement. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 11 at Route 1974 (Holiday Street) in Strasburg. Traffic Signal Replacements. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming, Monday to Friday.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours.
* Various roads – Mowing and shoulder work, Monday to Friday.

Secondary Roads
* (UPDATE) Various roads – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Wednesday to Friday.
 

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 302 to 317, northbound and southbound – Clean paved ditches, drains and culverts. Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing, Monday to Friday.

* (UPDATE) Route 7 Business (West Main Street) – Mosby Boulevard Project. Construction of Route 636/Mosby Boulevard extension. Mosby Boulevard will open on Friday, Dec. 21. Work continues on the project in other areas, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is May 2013.

Secondary Roads
