INTERSTATE 81 SHUT DOWN NEAR HARRISONBURG
Detours in Place After Tractor Trailer Crash Downs Power Lines

STAUNTON (UPDATE 4:10 p.m.) – The Virginia Department of Transportation says it may be several hours before Interstate 81 is fully open at mile marker 243 near Harrisonburg. Northbound and southbound traffic is being detoured onto nearby Route 11.

The VDOT Staunton Traffic Operations Center reported at 3:04 p.m. that a southbound tractor trailer ran off the interstate near exit 243 and struck a utility pole. Downed power lines prompted emergency crews to close both sides of the interstate.

Southbound traffic is being detoured at exit 245 and following Port Republic Road to Route 11 south, and Route 257 east to rejoin the interstate. Northbound traffic is being detoured at exit 240 and following Route 257 west to Route 11 north, then Port Republic Road east to rejoin the interstate.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
